That's exactly the feeling I had when the first notes of
Evil Masquerades's debut first hit my ears.
The album starts off with a powerful version of 'Ride of the Valkyries', then kicks it into gear with some fast tremolo picking with demented flare like we can expect from founder/guitar player Henrik Flyman.
Once the second track “Welcome to the Show” starts you know that you're in for a theatrical treat. With Henrik Brockmann, former singer of
Royal Hunt taking you on a theatrical journey like an evil
Jester narrating this show. Drummer Dennis Buhl and bass player Kasper Gram round out the rhythm section, with Dennis utilizing his cymbals to bring these master pieces to life. Dennis uses his cymbals for fills, like most drummers use toms. As you continue, each song take you through a twisted evil experience. This album is filled with their interpretations of classical pieces like Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” in “Surprises in the
Dark” and Bach’s “Badinerie” Ending the album is the song “
Evil Masquerade”, which is a mixture of what I would describe as psychotic carnival music, This song is very powerful with his lyrical reprise of the album.
You can hear the heavy influences of classical musicians through this album, but even still this band stands on its own. So if you're bored with the usual strum and drang of the repetitive neo classical wanking, this trip to the disturbed aural visions of EM might be just be what you're looking for.
