They've got an excellent frontlady, great songwriters, and very good musicians.

I'm always interested in checking out new Alternative Metal bands and I've also got a predilection for talented female vocalists. The Red Velvet Line offers us the best of both worlds with their debut album, The Stars Are Falling. This 5 piece band is an offshoot of the Roman Gothic Metal band, Glassmode, which was popular in their local club scene. They called it quits in 2008, after numerous line up changes, and having released an EP. Sue (vocals), Simeone (bass), and Gianni (drums) remained to regroup themselves with 2 dedicated guitarists. They recruited Ricarrdo and Carlos, who were 2 of Simeones ex-band mates from other bands. They both came from metal bands in the Roman metal scene. Carlo was a bonus for the band, because he is also a prolific songwriter.

Sue's voice ranges from the sassy style of Chrissie Hynde (from The Pretenders) to the sweetness of Pat Benatar. Most of the songs were written by Carlo and Sue. Carlo prefers the 1980's metal style and Sue leans towards a modern rock sound. So that's why many of these songs sound like NWOBHM, that's been glossed over with the shimmering sound of grunge influences. It gives their music the effect of Grim Reaper meets the Foo Fighters, or Def Leppard meets the Smashing Pumpkins. Flashy guitar solos are scattered throughout the album, which are suggestive of Ritchie Blackmore's colorful style. Track 5 is a Grunge styled cover of the classic new wave song, Maniac, originally performed by Michael Sembello on the 1983 soundtrack of Flashdance. There are 2 power ballads mixed into the 10 tracks, which are good songs, but don't rock hard enough in my opinion.

Maybe Glassmode didn't work, because they didn't showcase their guitarists enough. This outfit is a better fit for Sue, because she can loosen up a bit, and do more with her vocal talents. This band has all of the ingredients needed for success. They've got an excellent front lady, great song writers, and very good musicians. So they should have no problem with getting signed to a label. I'm proud to say that this album is available in the states. I bought it, and I'm a satisfied customer. But I'd like to buy the video, so that I could watch the pretty lady sing on my I Pod.
