... 17 tracks which endure for over an hour of playing time, it's one without enough extreme breakdo

Gothenburg's greatest claim to fame is their thriving melodic Death Metal scene. But this time around, we get to take a look at one of Gothenburg's Gothic Metal bands. I find the element of dark melancholy from most Gothic Metal bands a bit too disturbing for my personal taste. But One Without offer up a much milder style of the genre, in the same way that the melodic Death Metal in Gothenburg is much milder and more accessible than most Death Metal is in other parts of the world.

One Without is a 5 piece band. They feature 2 guitarists and are fronted by a talented female vocalist. Catrin Feymark has a very strong voice like Ann Wilson of Heart, with the cockiness of the vocal style of Edie Brickell. The grim back up vocals of guitarist Kenny Boufadene, sound something like Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. Which give their music a "beauty and the beast" effect, like we hear in bands like Battlelore, or Eyes Set to Kill.

The first few songs are driven by heavier bass riffs in the style of melodic Death Metal. This is coupled with the glittery and dazzling ambiance of the guitar music, which sounds something like the guitars of John Lind of Ulvhedin. But the music changes it's style to sound something like the Smashing Pumpkins or Pearl Jam. But that goes back and forth between the heavier intervals, with the grim back up vocals, and the sharper sound of Melodic Death Metal. The lyrics seem to be about relationship problems, from a woman's point of view.

This same old routine gets tiresome midway through the album, so it's easier to listen to while you are busy. This album is composed of 17 tracks that endure for over an hour of playing time, it's one without enough extreme breakdowns to bring it out of the dullness. Their previous album, Thoughts of a Secluded Mind, capitalized more on the Melodic Death Metal sound. There isn't a whole lot of difference between the 2 albums. They both sound nearly the same, but Sweet Relief focuses a little bit more on the melodrama, with more emphasis on the eloquence of Catrin's vocals.
