Thyreos, unsigned melodic metal warriors from Degerfors in Sweden, have released ‘Sound of Destruction’, a solid debut and a recommendation for fans of Firewind, Edguy and Iced Earth.

Thyreos play metal with a more rock and roll style than the majority of Swedish riff machines. They’re not quite power metal; at no point do they rocket off into ridiculously over the top moments, but the piano led ‘Me and Myself’ throws a bit of cheese on the platter. Their riffs are catchy, not overly technical and their solos are classically rock and roll, rather than power metal shredding. The title track is particularly catchy and melodic, so much in fact that my non metal-loving girlfriend thought it was pretty awesome. That shows the kind of cross genre appeal that Thyreos possess, which definitely could be a plus in releases to come. We’ve seen the kind of adulation Firewind and Edguy get for being more rock and roll power metal bands, and Thyreos use the same formula. They’re not as good as either of those two bands, but they could be. The catchiness permeates itself into most tracks, especially the rocking, Edguy worship of ‘Never Gonna Fall’. It’s tracks like this could definitely see them pleasing the festival metalhead;, beer in one hand, horns in the other, head banging.

It’s not all lighthearted fair though, the thundering ‘Before the Eyes of God’ provides a more metal edge, and following track ‘Unforgivable Sinner’ has quite a stomp to it as well. Vocally, Thyreos have the traditional power metal vocal, clean and clear, instilling an essence of the epic into the band’s music, but keeping it sensible as well; only utilising the usual ridiculously high pitched scream once, in the galloping ‘Sinking Ship’.

I think Thyreos could have a bright future ahead. They play Euro-metal, it’ll be lapped up by Edguy, Firewind, and even more dedicated power metal fans will enjoy this. It’s a more straightforward release than say, ‘Tinnitus Sanctus’ or ‘The Premonition’, but fans of the aforementioned bands will find this a solid, enjoyable release.
