Chronique @ Ravenlady

12 Août 2010
After publishing 2 EPs (“Judas says Sorry”, “Meet John Doe”) the Viennese Metal band SUZIE CRIES FOR HELP has finally released its first long player. Singer Jeremy Montorio having left the group, founding member Michael Schröttel has taken the front position. Accordingly, the sound has changed a bit – for the better! “Scars of Memory” presents an engaging mixture of Melodic Metal and classic Hard Rock with just a touch of Alternative Metal of US descent. Strong, melodious vocals, hard rocking, excellent guitars and catchy refrains are the hallmarks of SUZIE CRIES FOR HELP in its current line up – a sure way to win the hearts of Rock fans and Metal fans alike.

In my opinion these guys are at their best in the fast lane. “First Blood” and “Stalker” are easy proofs for this but both are outclassed by my personal favorite “The Game” with its superb DISTURBED-allusions and “Inside” which is surely going to rock even larger venues. Killer riffs supporting great melodies are the cornerstones of this part of the album and make the quartet fit for large stadiums although they never seem to think about the simple commercial value of their work.

And yet SUZIE CRIES FOR HELP know perfectly well how to write ballads that are wonderfully emotional without being sugary and kitschy. The best of these are the haunting and melancholy “Time for Angels” and the sweetly desperate “99 Reasons” but you shouldn’t overlook “Between” and “Dark Portion of your Life”. Michael’s supreme voice with its slight CREED-timbre turns even the least of those into a pleasure, and when the guitars embrace the vocals every ALTER BRIDGE-fan will be instantly convinced of the worth of this band.

SUZIE CRIES FOR HELP are aiming for a place somewhere between SOIL, DROWNED POOL and WHITE LION. Are they going to be able to defend that claim? Well, we’ll see. Let me add just this observation: If they were an American band, their songs would be running on every radio program. But they are Austrians and it’s damn hard in our beautiful country to get any attention for a band that can’t be called Mainstream by any stretch of imagination. So, only the future will show how far they can get.
