It has been a long hiatus for
Heavenwood since "
Swallow" was released. I even thought the band had split up, but fortunately they haven't and this release arrived to me as a big surprise. I was immediately curious to discover how have the band members mind changed in about 10 years and "
Redemption" is a proof that people change, so their music also change...!
The band sound is really different from "
Diva" and "
Swallow", the gothic influences are less noticeable and their metal is sometimes more dense, stronger in the guitars, that build up more closed riffs, noisy environments... Vocals are also different, the clean vocals are much better now, the harsh or grunting vocals are still strong but mainly, the band produces an alternative metal sound that left gothic in the drawer almost all the time. It has mechanical rhythms like "Bridge to
Neverland" (with vocals resembling bands like
Samael - great), it has alternative songs like "Me & You", vocalizations that remember bands like Alice in Chains ("Fragile", "Foreclosure),
Favorite moments: the powerful, intense, slow "Foreclosure", "Me & You" and the opening track "13th moon", "Her Scent in the Spiral" (with some French vocals on background near the end of the song).
This album can bring some discussion regarding the band's change. Was it for better? For worse? The sound is more sonic now, the voices are better now,
Gothic music gone but also the hymns are gone!
Heavenwood now play a more elaborated guitar section, with denser rhythms but melodic enough to maintain their core, but the difference in their sound is huge after those 10 years. To me, "
Redemption" is not worse than the other works, maybe it lacks one or two top songs, but overall it's a good album, with more maturity and above all with determination by these guys who deserve our applause.
