Chronique @ samMETALHEAD

With their self-released debut EP, Pharaphernalia, Yonsample is finally starting to warm things up..

Yonsample is a 5-piece metal act arising from India, from the city Calcutta. Formed in 2008, the band has played many local & national gigs & are quite well-known in the local circuit. With their self-released debut EP, Pharaphenalia, Yonsample is finally starting to warm things up.

The Paraphernalia EP contists of 5 original tracks. "The Instauration" being the intro, is rather short compared to the other tracks, it basically sets the mood with its ambient keyboard sound & mid-tempo guitar & drumming. The EP really kicks off with the song "Passage" which features some solid drumming & guitar riffs. The keyboards play an important part in the songs, controlling the ambiance & adding melodies in between the tracks, which thankfully doesn't sound cheesy. Arka's growling vocals are decent, mixed with Pupai's clean vocals adds quite a depth to the track.

"Reincarnation" & "Breaking Through" are definitely the key tracks of the EP. "Reincarnation" combines a brilliant solo & some breakdown moments. The keyboards yet again do a fantastic job. "Chaos Theory" is full of breakdowns & wraps itself in a dark atmosphere. A must-hear song. The EP concludes with the addictive "Breaking Through" which has got enough breakdowns to keep the heads banging. But the brilliant combination of the keyboards & clean vocals is what sets this track apart.

The lyrics are very-well written and it synchronizes well with the music.
"Can my ignominy, derail your plea,
For a suicidal disharmony
This is the age of anarchy
The new(est) weapon is peace"

The recording is done neatly. The riffs and drumming were clearly heard. However, Arka's vocals in some songs felt a little weak. Nevertheless, the artwork is kick-ass & the songs are gripping. This EP is the proof of the amount of constant effort these guys have put in. Definitely a must-have.
