Chronique @ Onni

07 Octobre 2009
This Progressive Rock band from Colombia was formed in 2006 and has released 2 EPs so far. The latest one, “Over Calculated Fear”, saw the light in August 2009 and gives us a chance to get to know the upcoming album.

Well, I hope the album will be recorded in better quality. These 6 songs sound like a normal demo, but it’s not enough for an album, although the musicians play not so bad and they obviously could create something better… in future.

The EP starts with the fast energetic title song “Over Calculated Fear” without any intro and 2 things come up to the mind immediately: the quality of the recording is really low and the vocalist tries to sing something above his abilities. But still the band has good guitar riffs and nice melodies, also in vocals lines, and “Over Calculated Fear” is not the best song of those 6 on the EP. “As Hard as I Try” is more interesting, it changes all the time and shows some composing talents of the musicians. But I wouldn’t call it Progressive Rock, it sounds definitely Metal. “Dead Alive” follows the line of “As Hard as I Try”, but it’s more rhythmic, it has a heroic feeling and delivers more interesting solo. “A Fools Hope” is again fast and sounds like Power Metal, especially with this high and clean kind of vocals. “Transcend” starts slowly and softly and turns to the rhythmic and energetic song with all those tempo changes. Edgar Castro unfortunately lacks something, his singing sounds a bit false and stiffly. The last song “Left Unsaid” maybe is the best one, although again I would call it Metal, not Rock. It has interesting melodies, like other songs as well, and it lacks the good perform and recording as well. Can be that the band sounds better on the concerts and have some success in their homeland, but “Over Calculated Fear” EP doesn’t show that.

But let’s not dream “what could be”, let’s look – or listen – what we have. It’s a promising EP from a promising young band who has to learn much more to release a good album.
