This is definitely one of the most interesting Polish folk bands. Zywiolaks music cant be clear-cut pigeonholed. Musicians themselves define their music as polska muzyka neoludowa (vel Polish neofolk music). This album shows that our pra-Christian tradition and pagan rites are still alive in our memory.
From the first time Ive come across Zywiolak I admire magnificient timbres of female voices and strong male vocals. I must admit that I starded my folk music journey with Zywiolaks song - Femina. It is based on folk lyrics and talks about a young rebel feminist.
Probably the most recurrent motif in their lyrics is Midsummer Night. The mystical athmosphere of this pagan rite (Midsummer Night was the night of predictions, but also the time when a man could abduct a woman avoiding a revenge of her family) have inspired many bands. However, I enjoy Zywiolaks interpretations more than any others. Wily (probably you know them as Veelas - but if you had only read about them in HP series, you wouldnt have realized that in Slavic mythology they were beutiful women who blinded men or caused them frenzy) and Oj Ty Janie Sobotkowy are typical songs about Midsummer Night.
Another song that deserve to be mentioned is Epopeja Wandalska (Vandals Epic). Its short, but concise lyrics are very meaningful. Its also famous for its beats.
Zywiolaks music is a great combination of folk instruments and guitars sounds as well as wonderful and pure female and male vocals.
Album Nowa Ex-Tradycja consists of Zywiolaks finest songs and aged traditions that constitute inseparable part of our life. The variety of mythical creature and ancient rites in their lyrics is well-mixed with modern words. On the other hand, if you dont understand Polish, you can take pleasure in listening to it anyway.
