The album opens up with slab of uncompromising metal

Trollband are a compelling outfit that combine clean melodies with black metal vocals and fine musicianship that layer symphonic keyboards with shredding guitar riffs. The folk metal element runs throughout but is not the dominant factor here, you can tell they’re influenced by bands such as Eluveitie and Ensiferum but they still keep their own sound at the forefront.

The album opens up with slab of uncompromising metal on “Fire and Ash” as Sam Levitt attacks the lyrics with pure fury. The synths give the track a majestic feel to it while the guitars are non-stop with crushing riffs. “Nidhoggr” is one that throws you for a loop because at first you think you’re listening to two different songs as it starts to fade out and then comes back in with shredding guitar and symphonic keyboards. This definitely caught my attention and kept me intrigued.

The titletrack engages you from the beginning with cleaner vocals that are presented in a way of storytelling that has a dark and somber vibe behind it. The album as a whole is strong and very impressive as a debut, the songwriting and arrangements are complex with a hypnotic nature to it. “In the Shadow of a Mountain” will take on a journey through noble lands and battlefields and engross you in tales of betrayal and revenge. When you are done you will want to raise a glass of mead in a toast to Trollband!
