German Machine Made Of Steel

Gerald “Preacher” Warnecke known for his being the second guitar player in the legendary band of Running Wild decided to come up in light and in 2009 and after 24 years created a band with some other members from bands like The Company and Underdog. Their name, The Gate and this year without any loosing time they recorded their first full – length Earth Cathedral.

Many would think that the band’s style is the typical German power metal, but as the members support they mainly play heavy metal and I absolutely agree with them, nothing proves the opposite side and honestly Accept should be happy as there is now a band from Germany which does not imitate their sound and they play their style on the right way.

Well, Earth Cathedral could not stand without containing songs which follow the tradition of Running Wild and I believe that Preacher wanted this too, especially by the time that the power metallers do not exist anymore. Come on tell me, how many of you have you missed the pirate tune of “Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh” from Rock N’ Rolf and his company? I really have missed that, but the rhythm of “Earth Cathedral” makes me forget it, slow in the beginning and faster in the middle with an anthemical chorus, as it could not be different or better. How about “Into the pit”, hard, fast, ready to set everything on fire and no one will miss Running Wild after that. But those songs are just a simple sample of what The Gate can do…

Without any hesitation the best songs of the album are two, “Face the fear” and “Guy anvil”. Two songs with beautiful and tough riffs, an unstoppable drumming and solos which prove for one more time that the simple things in music are the best. I must also refer that in “Face the fear” you can hear three or four different riffs, something that we do not see it very often, because musicians luck inspiration or because of another factor.

Earth Cathedral would be a half album if it was not this voice of Guido Kramer, who used to sing in The Company, a thrash metal band. Before someone listens to the album may think if this voice is able to keep the songs on high levels, but by hearing “Deliver the sin” and the epic song “1000 miles away”, whose basic riff sounds like the one of “Children of the sea” from Black Sabbath, all the thoughts and the misgivings will be gone. Guido does it great with his low vocals and he is becoming better when he shouts, he has a characteristic voice, ideal for the band.

May there are two songs that sound little better than the others, but this is not a drawback for the band, on the contrary is a chance to improve their abilities much more and who knows, they may conquer the top. Preacher’s ideas in Earth Cathedral sound fresh and this is a step for the band to keep up the hard work.
