Chronique @ Onni

Do you like Hard Rock? I like Hard Rock, because it’s fun, it’s energy and it’s facile. It lightens our life, it can help to beguile on the road or be music for a party. And here we have the second album of the Spanish band Bad Way. The first one was released back in 1998. I don’t know what has caused such a long break, but I think these guys love music and believe in their talents, if they are finally back!

I have already written what I’d expect from a piece of traditional Hard Rock, and Bad Way satisfy expectations (just maybe this album is too facile). I don’t know what these guys have been doing for those 10 years, but definitely they didn’t loose their abilities and they deliver us a solid record. On the “Dead Letters” they show that they are good musicians and they understand what the good production is. It’s a pretty nice energetic music, with modern sound, with bright vocals – not as good as could be, Marc Vanway sometimes maybe does his lines not in a best way for his skills and abilities, but still the sound colour and intonating are good. The album starts slowly with the soft intro to the title song “Dead Letters”: it’s a lyric ballad-waltz with retro keyboards and quite classical vocals lines. There is another ballad on the album, “My Mistakes”, louder but overall it’s in the same vein. But “Dogs of the Dawn”, “My Way”, “Forever” and others are faster and rhythmic, powerful driving pieces. In point of fact, here everything is all right with the rhythm, drive and energy. Maybe this music is really good on a concert, with many moments to shout along with Marc and many opportunities to jump and headbang. But Bad Way doesn’t have that good melodies to produce the real hit.

Yes, there are some interesting moments, but in a whole the album is too straight, smooth and equal, although the musicians try to make different breaks, pauses and interesting passages. The album is a bit usual and dim, every song sounds like pre-hit, that let you think “oh, this is for sure a nice opening piece for the hit that goes next!” But no, there are no hit next. Unfortunately. Maybe on the next album, though?
