Chronique @ Satanicarchangel

A nice shoegaze album that brilliantly mixes elements of heaviness and melody to create a catchy and relaxing album

Airs originally started off as a depressive black metal/shoegazing band but as time has gone on they slowly dropped more and more of their black metal elements, resulting in a completely pure indie shoegazer sound on Adore. The sound is quite nice actually, it's very airy and melodic, the music is fairly emotional yet upbeat at the same time, Airs are really good at creating a nice sense of melancholy through their music and Adore is no different. Shoegaze has always been a good music for emotional exploration and Airs have showed how effectively the shoegazer sound can be utilised.

Airs play quite simple music, the music isn't complex by any means, the music is light and airy with a nice and soft level of distortion. The clean vocals float wonderfully over the music, adding a good sense of emotion to the music. They're quite varied, ranging from the wonderful shoegazer sound of Adore, to the more angsty punk delivery of blue. The singer is quite a good vocalist, he sounds a bit amateur but for me that only adds to the emotional quality of the music, he sounds earnest and heartfelt and I've got to respect that.

Anyone going into Adore thinking they're going to get anything even remotely touching black metal will be sorely dissapointed, even though the band has a history in the genre (can be debated but for now I'll go with it), they've dropped all of their black metal influences, creating a very pleasant and simple sound. The distortion the guitars use is soothing and relaxing, it's not overdone at all, it's far closer to dreamy shoegaze bands such as Slowdive than anything metal related. So yes, Adore isn't a metal album, not in the slightest, it's pure shoegaze and I really quite like it. I'm not one to stay within the confines of a specific genre (in this case metal), I like to branch out into different musical forms from post rock, shoegaze to electro, there's so much fantastic music out there waiting to be discovered that it seems silly to stay within the strict boundaries of the metal genre. Shoegaze is a musical form I've grown quite fond of in recent times, the dreamy distortion, repetitious song structures and subdued vocals really trigger something within me, I love the way the ethereal vocals play out amidst a sea of distortion, they give me a giant distortion buzz and I just cannot ignore that.

Compared to other shoegaze bands the music is a bit more edgy, there's a definite punk vibe running throughout the album, most noticeable in the track Blue where the vocalist resorts to a melodic shout throughout the song. The punk feel really helps to set this Apart from most other shoegaze bands, it adds a sense of heaviness and angst to the music which is lost within most of the scene. Whereas other shoegaze bands are content to create ethereal soundscapes through the use of high levels of melody and non existent anger, Airs are a bit rougher round the edges, there's even some blastbeating goin on in Adore showing that they haven't entirely forsaken their metal roots.

The guitars are really good on Adore, there's a lot of good melodies and there's a fair degree of heaviness intergrated throughout the music. The best guitar work in my eyes is probably on Sundial which starts with a riff that wouldn't be out of place on an Amesoeurs album. The riffing is quite innovative for a shoegaze album in all actuality, it mixes heaviness and melody yet never forsakes the shoegaze sound. It's infectiously catchy and memorable, with a lot of stand outs throughout the album. If there's one small complaint to be made it's that all the songs are quite similar, with not enough to really seperate them from one each other. It gets quite samey towards the end but thankfully the albums only quite short, so it doesn't wear out its welcome. I'd have liked to have seen a bit more variety in the tracks, listening to a full album of pretty much the same thing does begin to wear thin a bit by the end but the music is good enough on its own right to not result in a failure.

Adore is quite a good album, it's very relaxing and works well when all attention is payed on the music whilst your doing nothing else. It's a good idea to fully submerge yourself in the music, you'll be surprised at how quickly it's easy to get lost within the musical world of Airs. For fans of Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. Recommended.
