I'm a sucker for beautiful album art, thats a fact. Fjellelv's A Forest Funeral is a prime example of this.

The album art is insane, so I was tempted to download it (by the way, its up for free download at www.myspace.com/fjellelv).

So, I did it, and was surprised by it. It's a very, very, very simple album. You can tell he's serious when he stated that he made it in three days. Its a matter of repeated, light synths at different pitches. Yet, its one of the most infectious albums ever ; I can't stop listening to it. Its simplicity is almost the winner for this CD, and I don't know why.
This is especially prevalent in the song "Firefly". Its just the repetition of a weak synth at different pitches, but it makes me contemplate life.

Cons: Lets start with the negatives first.
First off, and most importantly, is obviously the simplicity and repetition of this album. Another problem is the length of the tracks. I think that Thorn could have made the songs shorter, and maybe made more songs. That would have cut down on the repetition and would have made this album even better.
Finally, the only other thing I think Thorn could've improved upon is the choice of synths. Some of them were kind of "weak" for lack of better words. They lacked body and sounded hollow and small. Maybe the layering of multiple weak synths would've formed a more meaty sound, as one might say.

Pros: Now onto the positives.
Like I said before, the album art is very kick-ass. Its true to the title, showing a dark forest with an overall blue tint. This gives off a feeling of depression, nostalgia (for me) and despair, which is perfect for the album.
Also, like I said, the album is very infectious. It's not necessarily catchy, it just grows on you like the forest theme itself is burying itself in your soul demanding more FjellElv.
Also the song titles themselves are beautiful. They conjure up vivid images of a desolate landscape of beauty. Its amazing.
On a scale of 1-10 on how great this album was, including decimals, I'd give it an 8.9 ! It shows potential for FjellElv.
