Let's respond to some of these lists:

7. Lifelover
8. Beherit
9. Summoning
10. Burzum

Woah, what? You put Beherit ahead of Burzum? What?
I don't get it.
Oh, and Lifelover. Dammit, I keep forgetting to check out that friggin' band. I keep meaning to but it always slips my mind. What album do you suggest by Lifelover?
Summoning, I dunno. This is a goofy reason to not love them, but I find all of their releases aside from Lugburz to feel too long. I have heard their first 2 albums, and I liked it, but listening to it all at once is draining.

I was gonna respond to Merc's list, but I haven't heard a single band on it. DURR.

1. Satanic Warmaster
2. "german tyrants"
3. Belphegor
4. Pungent Stench
5. Eisregen/Eisblut
6. Immortal
7. Marduk
8. Cannibal Corpse
9.Rammstein
10. Nachzehr

Aww, you're hurting Rammstein, putting them behind such a generic and bland Death Metal band. I find Rammstein changes and evolves dramatically over each release (except LIFAD which seemed to be a rehash of previous styles and Ideas). What do you recommend by Immortal? I own At The Heart of Winter and I've listened to Battles in the North and a few songs from Blizzard Beasts so far.
Belphegor I only heard one song from; thought it was too chuggy.

Beherit is incredible. They're like some sort of shitfuck combination of black, thrash, and ambient, Drawing Down the Moon and Engram are two of my top 25 favorite releases of all time. Burzum's great too but I only REALLY like a few select songs from them here and there, and he has a lot of albums that just weren't particularly great (Belus, the S/T).

And as for Lifelover, depends on what you want from them. I warn you, they're a strange and alienating band, combining Black Metal and depressive rock without really sounding like either of the two. If you want their most metal album go for their newest one, though saying it sounds anything like Black Metal is a bit of a Stretch, it always is with this band- but if you want their most accessible and rockish release, go for Konkurs. It's my personal favorite too, so that's The One I'd recommend.

This is staggeringly hard for me, but i've narrowed it down. NoNe of these are in any order, they're all special to me.

1. Black Sabbath (one of the true originators, and for my money one of the greatest bands ever, regardless of genre. Master of Reality, Sabotage, and Heaven & Hell are staggeringly brilliant records and even though they have some dud records [Never Say Die, Born Again, Forbidden] they have some absolutely timeless classics)

2. Fates Warning (The Spectre Within and Awaken The Guardian are just about among metal's finest records, period. They have some decent ones and some really dull records, but those two records are stunning)

3. Mercyful Fate (Don't Break The Oath gives Fates Warning and Sabbath runs for their money in being the best traditional metal record ever. The riffs, the brilliant lead guitar, King Diamond's ghostly wails, the Hellish production... it is just about perfect. Melissa is fantastic and the s/t EP is staggeringly underrated)

4. Slayer (ESPECIALLY the 1983-1988 era. Show No Mercy alone is better than most Thrash Metal band's entire careers, let alone Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood. I'll always go out to bat for South of Heaven too)

5. Hellhammer (Four words: Only Death Is Real. Enough said)

6. Morbid Angel (Altars of Madness is just about the pinnacle of Death Metal for me. I know that's cliched as Hell, but the record is so masterfully written and structured that I can't deny it. Blessed, Covenant, and the first two records with Tucker are brilliant)

7. Dismember (Like An Ever Flowing Stream is the other pinnacle of Death Metal to me, and to me it will always be THE Swedish Death Metal record)

8. Sacramentum (the rest of their discography is ho-hum, but Far Away From the Sun and the Finis Malorum EP [to an extent] are utter Black Metal perfection.)

9. Coroner (I love every single record from this band. Coroner were one of the few bands that evolved over the course of their career in a genuine, not artificial manner. Each of their records have something brilliant to offer. Even Grin is a great record, despite not being Thrash Metal at all)

10. Helstar (Remants of War and Nosferatu are the greatest combinations of Power and Thrash Metal ever recorded to me.)

It was really tough though.

I agree. Have you heard Fog's Kiss and When Night Surrounds Me? Not their best in my opinion, but still good nonetheless.
