Honestly the thing that blew me away about that Pagan Altar album is less the band itself (i've actually liked their debut for a long time), but how fucking good it is for being an album that came out 20+ years after the original record. The guitar work is just fucking amazing in particular. I mean, it obviously has that NWOBHM feel, but the riffs and the leads just feel incredibly 'fresh' and memorable, when they really shouldn't be.

Forbidden - Twisted Into Form

One of the most criminally underrated Thrash Metal albums of all time. Just about perfect, and the high water mark for the Bay Area scene.

Solitude Aeturnus - Beyond the Crimson Horizon

Excellent doom metal. A lot of people compare this band to Candlemass, but this album is really just as strong as anything that band ever did, with the sole exception of Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. Rob Lowe's Voice is absolutely fantastic and the riffwork is excellent throughout. The album has a distinctly epic, yet pummeling feel to it at the same time.
