French-Canadian. You're both right.

That Quebecois scene has a shitload of great bands. Sombres Forets, Miserere Luminis. I really need to get into that scene more.

Never looked into them even though I hear they're pretty good. I'll give 'em a shot now, thanks.

Less raw, more catchy riffs. i like the album, i must say. The sound may be less Extreme and Cold, it's still Shining in every part and second of that record

I'm only doing like one write up because for various reasons I don't feel like doing long write ups for all of these records yet:

-Necromantia - Scarlet Evil Witching Black: I got this today and I can't stop listening to it. Necromantia are one of the mainstays of hellenic Black Metal, with their most immediately memorable feature being that they primarily use 4 and 8 string basses instead of guitars as their main instrument. Even though they're Distorted the harmonic feel to their music is totally different from what you'd get with a normal guitar.

Anyway this is apparently 'symphonic black metal', meaning you'd expect a shitload of keyboard lines and whatnot, but Necromantia are never indiscriminate. The keyboards are perfectly utilized, and alongside the bass-driven riffs, it creates an earthy yet intensely Hellish feel. It's something entirely different than what you'd get from the norse bands.

These songs are just well written from top to Bottom, managing to be grandiose yet always tasteful and never overbearing. The riffwork is extremely strong on this; they're very well written, they're definitely memorable and they mesh in superbly with the crisp (yet not overproduced) keys. Some of the riffs have a definite NWOBHM feel at times to me as well. (the opening to "Black Mirror" in particular) The songs are very well constructed, each shifft makes sense and never feels interchangable, the keyboard lines are fantastic, and both vocals and drums complement the songs in the best way possible. The vocals are a caustic shriek (reminiscent of the great Henrik Forss from Dawn) with some dramatic narration that actually doesn't come off as overly cheesy or inane. The drumming is excellent, knowing when to utilize a variety of beats to suit the songs without being overbearing. Production is extremely good and fits the music like a glove.

This album is absolutely awesome. One of the most unique offerings i've heard in black metal. I'm going to have to revist their debut sometime.

The rest:

-Aeternus - Beyond The Wandering Moon/...And So The Night Became
-Averse Sefira - Tetragrammaton Astygmata
-Hades - Dawn of the Dying Sun
-Immortal - At The Heart of Winter (yeah I know it's Six, i've just been listening to a lot of Black Metal over the last couple of days)
