I might be going to Skull Fucking Metal Fest with a couple of people. It's in Toronto of Sep. 3, it's 19+ but I know a guy who knows a guy who makes fake IDs so I'm good, apparently the venue doesn't check for authenticity.

Well, I've seen Sonata Arctica last year and they were quite dissappointing - especially with their playlist (hardly played any song that I liked from them).

I've seen them this year too and they didn't sound very good, it was like Tony Kakko was choking and couldn't hold the vocals for too long a time...

Tarja was never my cup of Tea, I don't like soprano vocals (however, she was at The End of a lot of our jokes); as for Lacrimas Profundere, they put on a decent show, but I don't think I'll ever get into their music. HIM was as Far as my 14 year old self could go

Now, for some nice photos of Sibiu and blurry ones of Helloween (for whoever is interested)

The venue was right in the middle of the old city, old Market Square:

Some views of the city, that bridge is called the "Liars Bridge" and, as the name suggests has a few superstitions: if you tell a lie on that bridge you will break your leg/ be Cursed in some way. Second variant is that it was named that way because couples came there, declared their love or made all sorts of Promises, which of course they couldn't keep. And the third one is that merchants were thrown off that bridge for lying to their customers.

Mr Orange/Sir Brukenthal: The cat at the Brukenthal Museum, more popular than any XII th century painting:

In front of the Cathedral:

Some people dressed up as old workers of the city:

And finally, the concert:

Raina, why is Romania such a beautiful country???!!! I've heard terrible tings about your country but you prove every time the complete opposite

Friday 19 August 2011 - 23:41:58
You're not the first one to tell me that, Panzerjager. Due to a worse economy than the countries in the west (although it seems we always omit looking at our east & south for comparison) and the Fact that only Bad News travels about a category of people(like thieves, rapists, beggars, roma people), might be the reason why you are surprised that we may actually have nice nature and some historic landmarks around here.

Sure, not all cities in Romania look like that, there are plenty of ugly ones with communist style buildings or villages where people have to live in rather poor conditions. Don't imagine people starving , rather like not being able to afford health care.

By the way, was this your impression?

Well, I though it would be a bit like you said a contrast between those beautiful places and those 'forgotten' remains of the communism.
The video was only a part of my 'prejudices' on your country. Most I got from primary school. there was a girl in my class who had Romanian roots but her parents fled before her birth to Belgium ,fearing the remains of the communistic reign. Her parents were cleared somewhat disgusted from their home country and so did their daughter. That way I heard not so Merry things about your country. A one-way vision ofc

I love the historic parts of countries; and Romania doesnt dissapoint!

Well, during communist regime it's a different story, immigrants from those days are a bit more paranoid of nature.
It wasn't as bad as Soviet Russia from what I've heard , we were still fairly well.(and the South Park movie depicts Extreme Poverty, the mentality and names that belong to Russia or Ukraine decades ago, it was never that bad here) However, a lot of people couldn't afford a living - during the 80's especially, when the system started crumbling.

There was a show on TV that discussed the way in which Romania appears in hollywood movies, aside from Dracula.  I particularly remember one in which Rasputin(we got Nothing to do with the dude) was revived in Bargau Montain Pass in Moldavia(they somehow omitted the nice pensions and gentle nature I knew from over there, since it looked like Mordor) - I was laughing in stitches.

Off to see some Symphonic Metal in London tonight. Tristania, Xandria, Amberian Dawn, Van Canto and Serenity. With lots and lots of beer and maybe a greasy kebab on the way home.

Great night all the bands were on top form.

Amberian Dawn got things off to a good start. I haven't really heard much of their material before. The One thing they're missing compared to the other bands are really good songs. Pretty average band.

Serenity were solid. Now they do have good songs. They had a guest appearance from Clémentine Delane from the band Whyzdom. She has a great Voice, I recommend you check Whyzdom out if you haven't already.

Xandria was the band I wanted to see the most, and they didn't disappoint. The new singer is great and so are the new songs. Great band.

The biggest surprise of the night was Van Canto. They were The One band on the bill I didn't mind missing, but I'm sure glad I didn't. I can't believe I'm saying this, but they were the band of the night. Maybe it was because by that time I was rather drunk and enjoying having a good old sing song along to, The Bard's song, Master Of Puppets, and Fear of The Dark. Great set, different, but still great.

By the time Tristania were on it was pretty late on a Sunday night and the crowd was becoming thin. Shame really as they missed out on what was the perfect ending to the night. I think out of all the bands playing they're the most talented band of them all. I will now be looking into Tristania's past material. I felt sorry for them as they were the headliners playing to a crowd that were leaving, but I understand as people do have jobs to go to in the morning. I'm glad I stayed to The End to Witness truly talented musicians at work.
