Yep. It was my first Black Metal band. It also has 5 stars on SoM and their album Funeral of a being was ranked one of the Best Black Metal albums on numerous charts. Although I don't know why.

For once, minirad's right, even though he used SoM's rating chart as a popularity measure which is a retarded way to go by it. Xasthur is a hugely popular Black Metal ACT, one of the forerunners of the USBM scene, and a VAST influence upon many DSBM artists.

Doesn't make his music any less shitty, but yeah.

Agreed completly about his music being shit, but I don't call the popularity a source to call a band mainstream. I would just call Xasthur (very) popular in the metal and/or BM scene. Mainstream is such an... overused word, makes me think of Slipknot or Metallica.
