miniradman says : If there is technical Death Metal what about technical black metal. I guess most of it would be technical.

Deathspell Omega, Keep Of Kalessin, Drottnar and probably Unholy Matrimony could be considered technical black metal.

Drudkh per se may not be NSBM, but if by memory serves me well, some of the members in the band are affiliated with bands that have NS ideologies. So you're not too Far off the mark there.

oh, and a lot of these bands certainly aren't what I think of as raw black metal. When i think of raw Black Metal I think of Enbilulugugal, Black Tribe or Abruptum, not Finnish BM like Behexen or Horna.

Have you heared about band called Deggial? It's Turkish Black Metal band, relatively new, they've released demo in 2010. Also Malaysia has really good Black Metal underground scene- Omen, Larrong, Brabazom and many more.

Haven't heard any of them, I'll be sure to give them a look.

Oh, and as a second thought I had after I re-read my own post: Raw Black Metal isn't a genre, it's simply a characteristic of the music. That's one of the reasons why all these recommendations are all over the map. Calling "raw black metal" a legitimate subgenre because some Black Metal bands play raw while others don't is like saying "blastbeat death metal" is a genre for the same reasons.

"pure black metal" is equally bullshit. What are we defining "pure" as? The (lack of) genres that influence a Black Metal bands' music?

Oh, I see your point here. But isn't 'pure' like synonym for 'oldschool' here? When I read 'pure black metal' I automatically think about early Mayhem, Darkthrone, Burzum etc. The origins of the whole genre.
I mean, it's the only thing that crossed my mind, I'm not saying I'm right here

The thing is though, the Hellenic Black Metal movement occurred right around the same time the Norwegian one did. Hellenic Black Metal has strong heavy/trad metal overtones, so I wouldn't really consider it "pure" Black Metal, but it would fit into your category because it's an early incarnation of black metal. The same could be said of first-wave Black Metal too.

in short, that doesn't make sense because "pure black metal" by your definition isn't purely black metal.

just outta curiosity... what are some of these early greek Black Metal bands? the only "first wave"-era Black Metal band from Greece that i'm aware of is Necromantia. alotta countries other than Norway had Black Metal bands before The Cult following gained a worldwide notoriety. Salem from Israel has been around since Varg was burning Down churches, its sucks that alotta really deserving bands never got noticed simply because they weren't scandinavian or didn't have any labels in their country that'd Sign em

The "big three" of Hellenic Black Metal are Varathron, Necromantia and Rotting Christ. However, there's a lot of other bands that go pretty much unnoticed, like Thou Art Lord, Legion Of Doom and Fiendish Nymph. It's a shame a lot of this stuff got pushed into obscurity, there's some really good shit going on here.

Never heard of varathorn, but judging by the longevity of their career, I'm definantly gonna look into em when I'm a little more sober
Anybody ever heard of the Chinese band Ritual Day? I discovered their album sky lake earlier today, it's nothin short of incredible. if you're into Black Metal with some catchy melodies and a decent production value, give em a listen to

Greece definitely has many pretty interesting bands, I need to catch up !I was really surprised when I started to listen BM from my country, apparently they are well known abroad. Besides the NSBM bands, that I don't like actually, polish underground has much to offer: Demonic Slaughter, Black Altar, Primal, War (album 'Holy war' is a masterpiece!), Kriegsmaschine, Szron - and many more which I don;t remember now- bands that really are worth to listen to
