Ignoring the pretentious name, what is your opinion on this genre?

Personally it is one of my favourite genres. Most of it has very slow progressions, which may put people off of it, but it is quite beautiful.

Examples:

I didnt bother loading the first song, cos itd take forever. I think Post rock is good. But it depends on the band. I dont particularly like some it, and yet some of it is really damn good. I didnt go much on Ashes in the snow and yet i loved GOD is an astronaut. There are deffinately worse genres out there, slam death for example.

Most people enjoy the shorter progression style that GIAA goes for. I absolutely love GIAA, but compositionally bands like Mono and GY!BE are Far superior.

You'd know more than me, but GIAA were just damn catchy, and this is coming from someone who doesnt go much on instrumentals.

Nope. That's shoegaze.

This is the Godfather of post-rock.

Okay, then you have to clear something up for me: What is post-rock then exactly? (I listened to the fragments... but just explain)

It's a very vague and ambiguous term, but it's generally thought of as music that takes traditional "rock" instruments and aesthetics, but creates something that is completely unlike rock music as a whole, thus the term "post-rock". In a way, it's the natural Evolution of rock music, mainly relying a lot on slow, minimalistic compositions (although GIAA does write shorter, poppier songs from time to time) and a bigger focus on atmosphere as opposed to melody for melody's sake. Sometimes it's hard to define what post-rock is and isn't in words, but it becomes very easy to spot after listening to the genre a bit. It's a very recent term- I read in an interview that only in the last few years has God Is An Astronaut been called "post-rock" and before that they were just thought of as an ambient/electronica band.

I have a very love/hate relationship with the genre, since with post-rock there's a very fine line between sheer Ethereal beauty and pretentious bullshit. Sigur Ros, Nyctalgia, GIAA and Do Make Say Think are all wonderful bands that bring me to the verge of tears, but Godspeed You! Black Emperor and a couple others BORE me to tears.

Agreed. Most of that long ass post rock is boring, and you sit there wondering when its gonna end (as it seems to drag on for fucking hours). yet with long good songs, such as Opeth (yes i always refer back to Opeth), the 10 or so minutes fly by and make it feel as if you listened to a epic 4 minute  track.
