The best album of Melodic Death Metal is definitely Heartwork from Carcass.

It's a bit surprising not to see the english band there...

In fact my list would be very similar to BG's one with a few exceptions.

I'd like to add also Hypocrisy and OLD Amorphis.

Heartwork is considered as Melodic Death? I didn't know.
I don't know very much about Death metal, but I like the  first album " Skydancer " from Dark Tranquillity.
I also like At The Gates.

Carcass' Later work from swansong. That is melodic. Or heartwork. if it wasn't for Carcass making michael amoot famous then Arch Enemy wouldn't be nearly everyones favourate bands.

There good mind you, byut my favourate "melodic" is Carcass (late)

At the moment, my absolute favourite would have to be Insomnium. Amazing band, and seemingly underated and overlooked. Also got much love for In Flames.
