As far as Death Metal goes, The Answer is fairly simple: George Kolias from Nile and Gene Hoglan from.... so many bands! These are the two that imo developed the insane cymbal/kickdrum 320 bpm stuff...

On the general aspect i'd have to mention Danny Carey and Van Williams!
