The band is called Dead Can Dance (they aren't metal), and the album is called Within the Realm of a Dying Sun.
This is a masterpiece. It isn't quite my favorite album, but I can't get enough of songs like The Gathering of Flowers and In The Wake of Adversity.
Funny, I know of this album because in an interview for Varg Vikernes, he was asked what artist inspired him the most. He responded that he doesn't like artists, he likes albums. And he said that this album was his favorite album ever.

I'll keep this to metal and other Extreme genres, as saying every single one would take too much space.

=Progressive metal (tied between Two albums)
Devin Townsend - Ocean Machine: Biomech
-To this day, no album has sounded like this. Atmospheric perfection.

The Ocean - Precambrian
-Too hard to classify. Along with Gangrene, the composition is flawless.

=Black metal
Mirrorthrone - Gangrene
-The orchestration and composition are godlike. The passion felt from this album is overpowering.

=Death metal
Immolation - Close to a World Below
-The pure Essence of soul crushing death metal.

=Power metal
Versailles - Noble
-The variation is perfect, the guitar work is incredible and the overall feel of the album is cheesy as Hell, but wow, that is damn good cheese.

=Doom metal (tied between Two albums)
Daylight Dies - Dismantling Devotion
-Riffs, atmosphere and melody. All perfected on this album.

Esoteric - The Pernicious Enigma
-The Epitome of Darkness in music.

=Thrash metal
Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly
-Technically proficient perfection.

=Industrial metal (tied between Two albums)
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
-Nihilism defined in music. Sludgy, emotionless and crushing.

Strapping Young Lad - City
-Insanity defined in music. The intensity is almost insurmountable.

=Industrial
Swans - Filth
-The Soundtrack to getting brutally slaughtered. Heavy as fuck.

=Noise (tied between Two albums)
Merzbow - Venereology
-A horrendous wall of noise, truly enigmatic and amazing.

Gnaw Their Tongues - All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity
-Truly terrifying music, unnerving as hell.

=Grindcore
Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless
-Emotionally Intense and Inhuman grindcore.

=Crust
Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing
-The pinnacle of crust. Aggression and rawness in it's true form.

=Metalcore
Buried Inside - Chronoclast
-Batshit Insanity intertwined with emotion.

=Post-hardcore
Fall of Efrafa - Elil
-No words can describe.
