I never knew that and I'm from the UK.
What I do know is that we have a huge binge drinking culture here. Some reports say it's costing the country £20 billion a year. 17 Million working days are lost to hangovers and drink-related illness each year. The annual cost to employers is estimated to be £6.4 billion while the cost to the NHS is in the region of £1.7bn. Billions more are spent clearing up alcohol-related crime and social problems. In addition, alcohol-related problems are responsible for 22,000 premature deaths each year.

I don't know why were not more like the French and Mediterranean countries who can drink responsibly. Maybe it's to do with the weather, sunlight, and what you drink. The drink of choice here is larger and spirits, I guess with the French and Mediterraneans it's wine. When we drink it's to get absolutely wasted. I think it must be a Northern and Eastern European thing.

Raina says : Just checked wikipedia. If it's correct, I partly take back my words, there are actually a lot countries that allows drinking anything from 16, like Greece, Portugal, Luxembourg, parts of Austria and Georgia...
Not to mention stuff with <22% alc. at 16 in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands.

WTF is with 5 (in private) in the UK ?! 0 Might as well put beer in the milk bottle...
Though in Albania, there's no legal drinking age, so I guess you can drink anytime...

@Demogorefest, could be worse, like 25 in India 0

It must be a freaking lie , or politics , to sound like "law obedient europeans " . I have traveled all greece , and i havent found a drinking age limit anywhere (a little proud of it , yes )

Well, that is written in your law. Theoretically, you shouldn't have been able to buy any alcohol under 16, but I guess it doesn't really apply in real life.

Not that the 18 law always applies here...Only the more 'serious' pubs or supermarkets ask for ID, but it's usually very easy for anybody to buy alcohol as long as you don't look like a small child. Plus, people start drinking from home...especially if someone in your family owns a vineyard 0

As for that 5 year in private drinking age...it is actually written law too. Too bad there are so many problems, never quite understood why people can't drink just for pleasure or getting into a more talkative Mood, instead of destroying your senses and falling under the table.

It's completely different in Canada, at least from what I've experienced. Even a hairy Portuguese guy like me who can grow a dank-ass beard in a week or so (and look pretty fuckin manly if I do say so myself) can't do shit, bars and shit'll ID you if you even LOOK under 30. Kinda sucks, but I don't drink regularly so I can deal.

Yep. Here in Canada it is really uptight. Oh, and, beards for the win!

AC/DC Back In Black.  That's a good album to play quarters to at a  good beer party. You know, you bounce a quarter off of the table.  If you get it into the glass of beer, then you choose which friend will slam it.  If you miss, then you have to slam it.

To anyone who bitches about that, it's only beer, which is better than using narcotics. Down here in Southern Arizona, crack dealers are all over the place. Plus just about any other type of dangerous shit is also available.  Many  more products like this are moving northward from Mexico.  So just drinking beer isn't so bad.

Some people are just to  weak to either know when they've had enough beer or to get their Lazy asses out of bed in the Morning, to go to work and tough it out. 0
