Specifically this song:

I found that this song was pretty much the best thing Death Metal had to offer (at the time that is). It wasn't slow, boring, and shitty like Obituary.

That being said, after the Cannibal Corpse phase, I think that Crypotpsy (NoNe So Vile), Morbid Angel (Altars of Madness) and Suffocation (Suffocation) is where I went. It worked for me and I tend to be a somewhat Stubborn bastard when it comes to getting into new genres of music when I already like something else.

Your entire post is a massive, flaming truckload of fail.

I'll second that.

You explaining why you think the opposite might be more interesting.

*sigh* 2ams are killing me

I'm sorry, but my point is that I don't understand why people go to OSDM when recommending new bands? why must OSDM be the gateway for all people new to death metal? Quite honestly (for me) OSDM is really really hard genre to get into and it's not for everyone (Well... maybe because of the path I took was through Deathcore).

Also, I don't know of many "unhardened" metal fans who listen to OSDM. It just seems like the type of genre that is strictly reserved for the Elite when it comes to metal fans. I just think that throwing people into some OSDM is like sending a 3 year old to university. They probably wont get it (unless they're sheldon cooper ).

Either way, I still stand by my opinion of Obituary and Autopsy.

So, Altars of Madness is not OSDM??

yeah, although I'm not very fond of OSDM, I just put that in there to show that I'm not a closed minded TWAT the classifies all OSDM as bad

Because I do like that album... honestly

I must apologise, I was really drunk when I replied to that. I think I got annoyed by what mini said about Obituary. You know how it is, alcohol has the ability to blow things out of proportion and for whatever reason I took Offense to the comment 0

Of course, reading it now I can't help but laugh at myself.

However, I still disagree with your post. I'll explain now. I don't really think pyou fully grasp the point of Death Metal. Cannibal Corpse is great, don't get me wrong, if you're in the Mood for some boneheaded, straight forward, ultra-fast Death Metal but there's more to it than that. I happen to find songs like "In The Grip of Winter" by Autopsy a Hell of a lot heavier than anything CC has done. Speed isn't everything man, a bit of variation in the music is what keeps it exciting. And besides, without those slow parts, you couldn't have those bone jarring tempo changes that are a staple in Death Metal music.

You've kind of gone backwards from the most modern (and absolutely shitty) form of Death Metal (Deathcore) and back. I think it's better to start from the beginning, that way you'll have a better understanding of the genre and how it's progressed.

I'm kinda just rambling here, as I tend to just type as the words come to my Head like you would a normal conversation. I hope I actually made a point somewhere in there. Sorry again for the unecessary Reaction to your original comment mini.

See, thats where we're different. When I listen to Death Metal, I don't feel the heaviness that others feel when they listen to Autopsy (checked out In The Grip Of Winter). I look for speed, Power and technicality. This is why I don't think that recommending OSDM is a good way to recommend Death Metal for a novice. I think that many people would get the wrong impression of the genre (I know I did). Don't get me wrong, I like a little bit of variety and heaviness in my Death Metal and sometimes songs or bands with hints of OSDM are awesome. But I just don't feel it

Well I'm into Metalcore, Deathcore is the product of Death Metal and metalcore. I Wanted to see if I can get into Death Metal a little more. The logical path for me to take is through Deathcore, and it worked . But because I've done that, I miss out on what people "feel" to OSDM.

Thats what the forums are here for I guess
Bah... don't worry, I'm used to it

@ mini : I think that why most people would recommend OSDM to start with if you're new to the genre is because those are the foundations of the genre. It gives you references which you'll need to understand where modern "Death" comes from.

It's hard to say you're into Death Metal if you haven't at the very least listened to some classics. At least so you know what you're talking about.

Taking your argument the other way round, when you say that you wouldn't think anyone would be starting with, let's say, Autopsy or Obituary, I think it would be true of bands like Origin or Necrophagist. If I didn't know DM at all, I don't think playing Antithesis would help me wanting for some more DM!

On the other Hand, if someone's just a casual listener, then any band may be suitable. But if you want to learn and really get into the genre, there are just some bands you cannot ignore. Too often, you see people raging about the latest sensation released on Dark Descent or Nuclear War Now! because it's trendy and all but having overlooked essential bands.

Thats funny, because Origin's Antithesis album is the first techincal Death Metal album I ever got into. In Fact, I still remember the song which got me into the genre.

Because Capharnaum just didn't cut it

Although Origin isn't the very image of Death Metal, it did encourage me to explore the genre farther. Which I think is essentially what the purpose of the thread is meant to do.

Although many people got into Death Metal by looking at the origins and going from there. This is just my Journey of how I got into it, and if it worked for me, it might work for anyone (including a novice)

Obituary got me into Death Metal and are still one of my favorite bands today. I think they're a lot more accessable than a ultra technical band like Origin, whose music (I think anyway) is more aimed at other musicians than your standard metalhead anyway.

Moose1220, what genres do you like? it'd be better to recommend something Closer to those genres and lead him in slowly rather than taking stabs in the dark

Well, I should mention, after I started this thread, I kind of Forgot it existed but since then, I've been getting into Melodic Death quite a bit, bands like Divinity, Into Eternity, Orpheus, Cypecore, Artas and System Divide.  Maybe there are some other bands that sound similar to these?  In answer to your question, I'd say Thrash, Power, and Progressive are some of my favorite genres, with Metalcore in there as well.  I've slowly been getting into some Deathcore, like Dirge Within.  Maybe something like them as well?  I did get Obituary's latest album, which I enjoy.  But again, thanks for all the suggestions!  I haven't really had time to really research all these bands, what with school, girlfriend, work, etc.  But I appreciate everyone's help!
