Come on guys, rec him something good!

Krypts are cool, as are Immolation and Death (obviously!)

Heres's a list of some (relatively) well known bands that I think are good starting points for a few different styles of DM. I suggest you write it Down and go through at your own pace, because, providing my memory works, it'll be somewhat long.
I'll give you the band name and 1 or 2 albums that I think are their best.

Here goes:

Autopsy - Severed Survival / Mental Funeral (Death/Doom)
Obituary - Slowly We Rot / Cause of Death (Old School Death)
Angelcorpse - Exterminate / The Inexorable (Black/Death)
Cannibal Corpse - Eaten Back To Life / Butchered At Birth (Brutal / Old School)
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness / Covenant (Old School Death)
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten (Technical Death)
Cryptopsy - NoNe So Vile (Technical Death)
Demolition Hammer - Tortured Existence / Epidemic of Violence (Death/Thrash)
Entombed - Left Hand Path (Death n Roll 0 )
Gorguts - Considered Dead / The Erosion of Sanity (Technical Death)
Carcass - Necroticism / Heartwork (Death/Grindcore/Melodeath)
Merciless - The Awakening (Death / Thrash)
Napalm Death - Scum / From Enslavement to Obliteration (Grindcore)
Infester - Into The Depths...In Degradation (Death /Doom / Pure Evil!)
Atheist - Piece of Time / Unquestionable Presence (Technical Death)
Immolation - Dawn of Possession (Old School Death)
Dissection - The Somberlain / Storm of the Lights Bane (Black / Death, much more Black Metal than Death but they're fucking awesome so listen anyway!)

I can't be bothered anymore 0 but that's a good few that should help to get you into the genre. Enjoy.

That's a pretty impressive list.  I think I know what I'll be doing today thanks for all the suggestions!

After reading the list, I think maybe, there's a tiny possibility that I'm not that much into straight plain-jane death metal.

Since I like catchy or melodic gay stuff, and I'm terribly picky, here is what I like out of the bands posted above:

Immolation - cool indeed
Bloodbath - great songs with a hook. Lots of people Hate them, you should check it out.
Carcass
Entombed
Blood Red Throne

I would like to suggest some melo death bands, I think a lot of people find it easier to start with these, especially if you make a transition from Power, progressive, Hard Rock clear type of vocals, then you can move on to the more br00tal DM :

Hypocrisy - melo death, quite easy to get into
Insomnium - same
Skyfire
Be'lakor
Omnium Gatherum
or if you haven't passes through the dangerously susceptible to criticism pagan/folk zone yet: Ensiferum

@ Moose1220, no problem man. I hope you enjoy.

Not into Melodeath myself. Except for the odd band, At The Gates, later Carcass. Actually, fuck, that's what I forgot. Moose1220, check out:

At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours

Absolutely incredible album full of greatness.

If your going to check out Ensiferum (as rec'd by Raina) then you should try Moonsorrow aswell, because they're better 0

Dethklok is good for beginning too.

Well of course Moonsorrow is better; kind of obvious.

I second The Red in the Sky is Ours. It's mindblowingly good.

Sure, Moonsorrow... I Wanted to leave the happy stuff aside. Try some Eluveitie too, while you're at it.

Here comes Captain Obvious: Amon Amarth - perfect for starters.

Oh, how could I forget this monster?

Moonsorrow are happy? Have you actually heard them before?

Also, no offence to Raina here, but I wouldn't bother to much about Amon Amarth, they're like the AC/DC of metal. All their songs sound the same. Booooring.

Hmmm, here's a thought...

Moose1220, what genres do you like? it'd be better to recommend something Closer to those genres and lead him in slowly rather than taking stabs in the dark

Naaa, fuck that. Assault him with the best of the best and if he doesn't like it's not for him!
