Adler's Appetite (en)

You have probably heard about Steven Adler, since he is a former member of the band “Guns n’ Roses”. This drummer has a new band since 2003: “Adler’s Appetite”. They are touring the world, releasing new material and planning a lot more. If you are a hard rock fan and miss the Guns n’ roses days… this interview is for you! (Steven Adler: SA, Chip Z’nuff: CZ)

interview Adler's AppetiteYou guys are coming back from a European tour. How was that?
CZ: Twenty four shows in twenty six days in Europe: France, Italy, Spain; we took a ferry and went over to England, played a bunch of shows in the UK. Beautiful! Great turn-out every single night, people loved the band.

SA: Yeah, it was really a lot of fun. We hadn’t been there for 5 years, it was really great. We are looking forward to go back again. It was really cool because the last show that we played was in London and Duff McKagan came on and played “My Michelle” and “It’s So Easy”. So, it was really special being there. Plus, Europeans are a lot like South Americans: very passionate about their Rock ‘n’ Roll.

You are starting a US tour tonight. What do you expect from it?
SA: I expect sold-out shows every night! I mean, we put on an “arena show” in a club or a theater. That’s our goal. It doesn’t matter if we are playing for 10 or 10.000 people.

During the tours, where are your favorite places to play at? You just said Europe was nice, but do you have any other special place that comes to your mind?
SA: As I always say, South America is a lot like Europe: people are so passionate… they sing every word [during the concerts]. It’s very special. And plus, I love when they go: “Ole, ole ole ole…”.

CZ: For this North American tour, I’m looking forward to going through New York, working our way to San Francisco where the great “Herbie Herbert” from Journey is [Herbie Herbert is a former Journey manager]. There are a lot of small little towns that were chosen to be in the tour, where people are “starving” for Rock ‘n’ Roll, so, 40 different cities, I’m pretty excited about that.

You are touring until July 3rd, anything planned after that?
SA: Canada… beautiful Canada.

CZ: But, our main priority after this tour is to go in the studio and start recording our new record. We signed a deal with a company; I can’t talk about it because this thing is huge. But, I will say that we have a new deal and we are going to be putting a full-length record. We are going to tour to support that record for as long as it takes.

SA: It’s very special getting this record deal. Nowadays bands don
interview Adler's Appetitet get a record deal, you know? We were trying out singers before we came out with Patrick Stone [Adler’s Appetite lead singer] and people would bring CDs in. I would say like: “Wow, who made this CD, who labeled it?” And they would answer: “Oh no, I made it in my bedroom.” It used to be a special thing to get a record deal. We used to work and practice.

So, us getting an actual record deal where we will get the money to help to pay for making a record, it’s really special. The whole thing, with me specially getting sober, it brings back the old days. If we would’ve just made a record in our bedroom, it wouldn’t be special, but to have someone believing in you it is.

CZ: You have that big machine behind you: people working on the record, on the radio, the band is out on tour supporting the album, maybe tv… there are so many ways to get your music out there. I think we have a really good chance with our very first record.

Your fans are probably asking for this album for a long time...
CZ: The only reason why it has taken this long is because we were looking for a team to get behind us and work with us. We got a great manager, his name is Jamie Adler, and he helped procure a deal for us. And now we will actually go out there, take these dreams and put them to reality.

With Steve’s new book out in paperback and his movie coming out, I think there is a lot of attention, focusing to see how he does and how his band does. We have been together for quite a long time, so this is nothing new.

SA: We have been doing so much touring. The best way for a band to get tight as a group is to tour! You play 6, 7 nights a week, you could only get great. So, we have been doing so much touring that now we are in that next level at our performances.

You guys released, almost a year ago, your single “Alive’ with you book “My Appetite for Destruction”. What were the results of these releases?
CZ: It was great. We had a lot of attention because of our song “Alive”, because his book was in the top 20 in the “New York Times” and because of the opening with the great King of Radio “Howard Stern”.

SA: We debut the book and the single on Howard’s show.

CZ: The book companies don’t put out a book in paperback unless it was successful the first time it came
interview Adler's Appetiteout.

SA: Yeah, my book company, Harper-Collins told me: “This is really big that your book is coming out in paperback”, I said: “Really?” and they said: “Yeah, if the book wasn’t selling and people didn’t like it, it wouldn’t come out in paperback”. That’s kind of like making a gold record for a second time in my life. So it was really cool, really exciting.

It’s a story about how I burned the candles with superstars and survived to share the story. It’s about all the scars and tattoos of my life in Rock ‘n’ Roll.

CZ: It’s a riveting and compelling read. And very easy!

SA: Very easy read. I made sure it would be easy!

Can you tell us a little bit about the process of writing this book?
SA: I started it about 8 years ago and I wasn’t really able to finish it because I was still addicted to drugs. Well, I’m still addicted to drugs; I’m just not doing them anymore. Unfortunately the addiction “part” doesn’t go away. But at that time I was just so high on drugs, I wasn’t capable of doing or remembering anything.

Doctor Drew [Pinsky] has helped me and supported me so much. He has taught me how to be able to move on with my life. And one way [to move on] was to accept responsibility for everything that happened in my life. Once I got to make amendments with Slash, Duff [McKagan], Izzy [Stradin] and Axl [Rose], it was like this huge weight lifted off my whole body, not only shoulders.

I don’t have anything bad about anybody in my book. I love everybody who was in my life and I’m thankful that they were part of my life.

When we were on tour last year, I read the book and when I got home I lit a big fire in my fireplace and threw my book in there. I said: “that’s my past, I cannot change it, I can’t re-live it. I want to live for now and believe in the future.

What would you like to accomplish with Adler’s Appetite in the next 5, 10 years?
SA: 10 years? I believe in the future but I’m living for now. Right now, we want to get this record out and tour some more. We love touring, we love performing!

Anything you want to tell our readers?
SA: Thank you for all your support. I can use all the love and prayers I can get!

CZ: Support your favorite bands!
