Draugnim are a fairly new band in the epic black metal genre. I was very impressed with the first few seconds of the first song', that I heard off of the album. They do not play a traditional style of epic black metal, but use a lot of atmosphere, and simple guitar riffing, with subtle "majestic" song passages that make it epic, as opposed to cheesy "slaying a dragon" and in your face type of epic feel.
Despite the fact that the instrumentation of this album is simplistic, it is extremely catchy, and is done in great taste. This album's roots in viking metal are fairly obvious, it is not an extremely fast album by any means, and has a perfect tempo that gives off a nice melodic feel that extremely reminiscent of viking metal. The summoning influence is very present as well, the vocalist of this band sounds very similar to
Protector of summoning fame, and the orchestral "marching" vibe that is expected off of
Summoning's late 90's-present works are ever so present in this album as well.
'
Northwind's
Ire' really reminds me of walking down a forest path, it is epic, majestic, and a very relaxing album (and that's even considering the vocals). If you are looking for an extremely complex album, with lots of typical ripping, shredding, gravity blasts, and intense growling, then this is not an album for you. This is for a relaxing, yet not terribly refreshing mood for a listener. Although it may be repetitive, it is very epic. If you don't get tired of an epic "men on a journey" sound, give this band and album a listen.
