ok so 1 mol ethanol = 36 ml

we have the 40 : 60 ratios

40 mol ethanol = 40 x 36 = 1440 ml ethanol
60 mol water = 60 x 18 =  1080 ml water

the ratio is 1440 ml: 1080ml

1440 + 1080.... 100%
1440 .... x%
___________
x= 144000/ 2520
x= 57.14 %

100 ml of solution is a whole (100%). 57.14% of that whole is ethanol, therefore the solution has 57.14 ml ethanol.

100 - 57.14 = 42.86 ml water.

 Definetly Russian.
Tell me if you pass that class.

Although I do like your methods, I'm afraid this cannot be possible. Because when ethanol and water are mixed, the sum of the Two separate values does not equal the final volume when the Two chemicals are mixted (eg. 50ml of water + 50ml of ethanol =/= 100ml of solution). I have to find a way, to get a 100ml 60/40 molvsmol ratio.

This is why I'm having so much trouble with this, its mind boggling

Ok, I was just using logic.   (like 1 kg of feathers = 1 kg of Stone) I don't know how this stuff mixes, but a ml is a ml regardless of what substance it is. And I don't know of any reactions when making vodka that would change the volume of liquid in any way ...

This is due to phenomenon volume contraction. For example, if I had a 2 liter jar, and filled it up to the top with marbles (ethanol) and if I had sand filled in all the gaps the marbles have left. If I separeated the sum of the marbles and sand, it wouldn't add to 2 liters, it would be more.

ugh, I think I might just give up

Going to give it a try, give me a moment...

edit: haven't seen a part of it in my lessons, can't help you

Its alright mate

If this is what I'm facing in year 11, I'm scared for year 12

Meh, by year 12, you'll probably be drawing hexagons...
Those problems + some trickier others that are to come are the most difficult and Nasty part of chemistry.

Here is the most 'metal' song you'll ever hear:
