Gang - V

'V' is dirty and gritty thrash; Gang's quickest album yet

Gang began their musical career in the early 90s, opening with their
simple debut in 1993 titled '1993'. It had a raw, dirty thrash sound
to it tinged with heavy metal along the lines of Judas Priest, Slayer,
and Iron Maiden. Since then, Gang has always been very good about
taking their time with each album and crafting it... usually about
five years in between. Up to this point, 'V' had only a three year
hiatus to be created, and may leave fans questioning just how much the
album will lead up to Gang's other creations in such a short span of
time. 'V' is certainly still gritty, and still enjoyable, so this
quickened release shouldn't darken any expectations of the fans.

The album opens with 'A Soothing Threat', which lives up to its name
for its ambient qualities which is very unexpected from a thrash band.
Of course, things start livening up with "Never Enough" with its high
pitched guitars that sound almost like it has a middle eastern tinge
to it before the drums kick in and it goes into the heavy chugs. The
vocals are a cross between Slayer and Guns n' Roses: edgy but also a
bit high pitched, like the guitars. It should also be noted that the
music isn't at speed metal pace, but more of a mid paced rhythm to
match the chug of the guitars. Some tracks are more solo driven than
others like the "Believer-Betrayer," but they never lose that catchy
chug that makes it so enjoyable, such as near the end. Sometimes the
chug is traded for an ominous melody like with "Into the Silence of
the Sea," which sounds depressing at first and then jumps into the raw
guitar formula that fans will have already gotten used to. The vocals
are even given a bit of a reverb and echo effect, but it doesn't
really enhance them; sometimes the highs seem even worse when they are
echoing.

"Heavy Metal Fever" is the most enjoyable track on
this album simply due to its fun nature. It starts out like a great
drinking song and then launches into the usual Gang musical formula,
but there is an energy throughout the song that just carries the
listener all the way through. One could even say there's a bit of
recent Helloween influence on this album; the lyrics from the track
"Are You Metal?" from their '7 Sinners' album sounds very similar to
this. Of course, Gang wouldn't want to disappoint creative purists
with a sudden curveball regarding the final track, "In Memory Of." It
picks up a sound that is similar to the first track and keeps up with
sombre vocals and a piano. Again, it is unlike what most fans of Gang
are used to and even new fans will probably raise an eyebrow. But,
thankfully, it adds that 'heavy metal soft touch' that leaves just as
fast as it comes.

Overall, Gang continues to stick to their
sound that they have been performing these last several years of their
career, but for those who may think the album tends to sound the same
a bit too often will be glad for the first and last track. Sadly,
both are extremely brief and probably could have been expanded for an
even better sound overall. However, fans who have been waiting on this
album will not be disappointed, and new fans who like bands in the
vein of 80s metal such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden will probably
find this very entertaining, but nothing new for their tastes.

One
of the oldest french bands still in activity (I mean they never
stopped like sooooo many bands that nowadays suddenly got reformed)
deliver here their fifth full-length album, simply called "V"...
well, guys, were you out of inspiration or what ? haha ! Just kidding
;-) Well that new record is made of 9 new songs that are simply
forged in the best of the 80's Heavy & Thrash Metal styles ! It's
easy to see what the band influences are... Exodus, Slayer,
Overkill, Raven, Accept, Anvil... Easy to see, but I don't mean what
they play is "easy" or simplistic ! That's damn efficient and will
explode the head of every metal maniacs around ! All the songs are
very catchy with a great respect for the True Metal tradition !
That's wild, melodious, energetic & powerful and always with
catchy choruses ! For sure, the well-thinking newbies into nu-metal
or metal-core can think this is outdated and not innovative at all,
but who cares ? GANG certainly don't have the pretention to renew the
style, they're all heavy-metal maniacs for so long now that their
only motivation is to play pure Heavy-Metal to please Heavy-Metal needs
from the Heavy-Metal world... See what I mean ? If you're not into
Heavy-metal, skip to the next review please ! And yes, GANG do it so
well with much honesty and sincerity that it won't take you long to
get under the spell ! All sonsg are very varied and well-structured
with great breaks and nice guitar solos... Some are really fast like
"Never Enough", "Overdose", "Sacrifice", some others heavier like
"Believer/Betrayer", "Skull's Out Of Genocide... and of course, like
all good 80's metal records, it includes THE ballad ha ! "Kill Me" is
the title and damn, this is so good... right in style... and also
that Heavy Metal hymn that is "Heavy Metal Fever" that once more
proves GANG are no arrogant wanna-be rockstars but Metalheads that
just want to have fuckin'fun ! If this is what you're also looking
for, then get this
