Rose bayonet were probably the premiere New Zealand
Heavy Metal band back in the early 1980's.
SAW them live a few times in
Wellington and once in Christchurch. They were pretty darn good at what they did. Unfortuantely at the time
Heavy Metal (depressing music) was really looked
Down upon in conservative New Zealand and only had a small following nation wide, plus a lot of guys I knew would not admit to liking HM even though they did as it was not "trendy" and most of the girls tended to run away from the long-haireds - we were "freaks". Rose Bayonet did their own orginal songs which were good quality and also a lot of covers by all the big HM bands at the tim like
Judas Priest,
UFO, Schenker etc. Always a good live show - polished and professional. Stefan Lavington was a
Hybrid of Blackmore/Schenker/Tipton and a really good player. The rest of the band were good too. I remember the drummer had this kind of blue see-through Ludwig kit and he was a real
Power drummer, good double bass. I don't think they would have ever made it internationally - and history is proof of that, but they were good at the time for New Zealand.
