I pay a lot attention to lyrics.
Even tough I'm Atheist  I don't listen to groups which meaninglessly abase religion.
(like Marduk) also I don't like unlimited sadistic lyrics.

such music nevers seems good to me.

As for me i care alot about lyrics, i enjoy a song more when i know it's meaning.

I love the texts of Cannibal Corpse, their about senseless violence, and i love that, it's great when you are really angry.

Also when i'm pissed off by someone, i just listen to Slipkont, their texts are awesome: fuck it all, fuck this world, fuck everything what you stand for...
But the funniest lyrics have Rammstein, they write about all kinds of love and S&M. I mean in one song their singing about someone who is having sex with his sister and his dog, that's just to funny, and their latest song Pussy: You got a pussy, i got a dick, so what's the problem, let's do it quick...

It depends so much. If a song is a Killer, then it's not that big issue even if the lyrics are not that great, and vice versa of course.
I pretty much think the vocalist as one instrument of the band and merely dig the sound of him/her than the words. Especially nowadays since I don't have enough time to deeply listen any new bands, there might come surprises when I finally concentrate to listen, what they really sing Chorus might give wrong idea...

Of course if both lyrics and melodies rocks, it's even better.

Anyway the lyrics are stories and any political or religious (not Pagan megal though) gushiness gives me rash...
I listen music to enjoy, not to take orders...

On the other hand I'm not native english speaker so some things I might miss
