Well it depends on what's classified as metal. I first started listening to Alt metal, and Nu Metal (SOAD Disturbed) when i was 10. but then i listened to Fear Factory when i was 11. so probably either 6 years, or 5 depending on what you classify metal as.

I'd say I've been listening to metal since I was seven. It started out with bands like Staind, Seether, Shinedown, Creed, and Sevendust.
General alternative and Nu Metal bands my father would play in the car.
Even though he had ACDC and Warrant CD's collecting Dust in his CD rack back home, he never played them.

since 2006 or 7 can't remember.  I worked in a warehouse shipping and receiving motorcycle gear.  It was mostly Death Metal, and I didn't like most of it.  Around 2009 I listened to some melodic industrial Death Metal and melodic Death Metal like Sybreed and Scar Symmetry, and was blown away.  Not too long after that I took an interest in the whole wikipedia Black Metal drama and got into the 2nd and 3rd wave of Black Metal, and eventually took an interest in some of the newer regular death metal.  It's now 2011 and I don't listen as much anymore but when I do it's usually black, black/death/thrash etc..
