In your opinion, what is the greatest guitar solo? Whether it be technical or just plain freaking fast, say it.

Angel of Death by Slayer, of course

good topic, some of my personal favorite guitar solos that i can think of right now are
Homage For Satan - Deicide
The grand Grimoire - God Dethroned
Under the Wings of satan - Ragnarok
Infernal final Carnage - Blood Tsunami
Elimination - Overkill
Maha Kali - Dissection
foul Parody of the Lord's Supper - Grand Belial's Key
...and a helluva lot more that i can't think of right now

Hmmm...what is "best" is subjective.
Great Kat's "The Barber of Seville" is an amazing piece of fretwork. It's the first one that springs to mind for me, but there are so many that I love.

The seven string sweeps in "Wrong Side" by SYL are great, and even better as Devy sings over them effortlessly. =p

"Bleed" by Meshuggah is also often noted for its drumming, but the guitar in it is amazing, I don't know how Thordendal manages to keep that pace up!

I know these weren't solos, per se, but I don't think a discussion like this should be confined to that. Sometimes great fretwork goes above and Beyond a few bars of fast arpeggios! (No Offense to Malmsteen, I know how he loves them. =p)

Mercenarion, I have to say, your signature made me laugh. Needs more cowbell, ahaha!

The sweeping is insane in Wrong Side.

And yes, even though the drumming is extremely intricate, so is the guitar. Also that solo in bleed is amazing to add on to that.

Hey, don't worry. Anyway, you said the guitar work in Bleed was amazing. Guitar work = solo. And thanks for liking the signature, it is from a Saturday Night Live sketch.

Sadly, I don't know the first song you put

Well, since Demogorefest put that many, why don't I?

Dead Man's Shadow by Kalmah
In The Constellation Of The Black Widow by Anaal Nathrakh
Libertheme by Behemoth (so many solos...)
The Tides by Darkest Hour
Panic Attack by Dream Theater
Cult of the Dead by Legion Of The Damned (both the solo and intro)
The Fecal Rebellion by Mirrorthrone

And just for a joke...
You Suffer by Napalm Death (epic solo at 0.0443 seconds)

All of this along with Angel of Death by Slayer.

The first one I put was by a woman called The Great Kat. She's a thrash guitarist, but was originally a classically trained violinist. She's one of the top 10 fastest guitarists in the world, and "The Barber of Seville" is her in a nutshell! You should check it out if you get a chance.

Necrophagist have a great balance between being heavy and being melodic, and I think songs like "Only Ash Remains" show how Death Metal isn't just about dropped tuning and chugging.

I may check out her song. Depends on my mood.

Necrophagist is awesome. "Only Ash Remains" is awesome. What isn't awesome about them?

When are they going to release their third album? It was supposed to be this year, but I haven't heard any news of a new album

Legion Of The Damned is excellent, probly my favorite band, them and Wintersun are my tied for #1 in my list right now. Feel the Blade by LOTD has a great opening riff in it, and Starchild by Wintersun also has a great opening riff

I haven't heard Feel The blade before... now I have. That opening riff into the vocals is epic. The whole song is freaking brutal. Thanks man.

Another great solo (well, who actually knows when we are talking about "this" song): Chromatic Chimera by Unexpect

It has a nine-stringed bass guitar (yes, 9-stringed), 7 members singing, a violin, death growls, Meshuggah worthy technical riffs and drumming. Also, it is very creepy at times. I'm not sure if you'd like it though, it is avant-garde metal.

glad you liked Feel the Blade, i highly reccomend their entire discography, and their old stuff under the name Occult if you can find it
i'm listening to that Unexpect song right now... i'm not a big fan of Experimental stuff.. sounds a little weird for my tastes, it sounds a bit like Sigh in parts (great Japanese Progressive/ Black Metal band)

I haven't heard anything about it yet. I SAW them live last Friday though! They were absolutely amazing! The album should be savage.
