sure ! bands like Darkthrone - well known, but still kicking ass, Incantation, Immolation, etc. - bands that are consisten with what they play. edit: not like Mayhem after De Mysteriis. Did you know that fucking Hellhammer took part in Weston Cage's pseudo-USBM band? Seriously, he is a sell out for me now.

pavel, I hear ya, I know exactly what you're talking about. I've read lots of old zines from the 80s and 90s (from this place in particular: http://sendbackmystamps.org/about/) and I agree with your perception on "underground"...but the thing is, you gotta remember, that's not how everybody else sees it. mini and ryan seem to think that "underground = less fans" which is only true in a really vague sense. There's tons of bands that have strong cult followings but could still be considered underground- in Fact, they're the forerunners of the scene.

Also, ryan, you gotta be the biggest pushover I've ever seen. It's as if you have no opinion and agree with me on everything after I say it.

EDIT: The Corroseum is a great place for old school underground metal zines/info, it's where I do the bulk of my learning on 80s trad metal.

Might seem that way, but i cant be fucked arguing with you. Im not going to satisfy your little fetish. It seems that everywhere you go there's always gotta be someone stating their oppinion. So why Fight it?

This is slowly turning into the classic "Mini vs. Enig" fight.

I'll go get popcorn.

...because you believe in your own opinion and want to try back it up? I'm not just some shit-eating instigator, I can be reasoned with.

Ok ok, fuck. Here's my opinion: I think that "underground" is bands that haven't really been heard by many people at all, hence Underground. Now, i think that by starting this thread, sure it might be similar to "rate what the. . . ", but it will help people become aware of more bands out there. Bands that have got talent but havent been recognised. And yes i wont be able to do shit for these bands, but hey isnt metal about sharing and learning off other metalheads? Also, i dont believe that "rate what the. . ." does that because you just listen to the song rate it, and get on with your day. You dont really talk about the band, whereas  on this thread you can talk about the band, pros and cons. It doesnt always have to be Optimistic comments, i mean you've proven that with your oppinion on Astral Winter.

The "underground" thing is definitely something that could go back and forth. I mean, if I were to get a couple of my buddies and start a band, maybe write a coupla songs, release a demo, I wouldn't really consider us "underground" no matter how good we were, just...unheard of, really. To me, the underground is kind of a scene that runs parallel to the metal scene with its own subset of fans, styles and ideologies.

Honestly, this thread just seems like, as I said before, an exercise in redundancy, there's nary an original idea to be found- I don't necessarily disagree with the concept, just they way it's been executed, plus the bands that have been posted aren't really representative of any valid movements or scenes occurring.

Fuck it. Why Fight it? It's not like anything I say is gonna make this thread go away.
Here's one of mine. Certainly an oddity in the French post-black scene, but a wonderful band nonetheless. You probably won't like it cause you don't like Black Metal (the Hell man) but yeah, here.

WOO! Yeah Peste Noire!

I'll post two.

Some very good post-hardcore (though it is very metallic)

Some very groovy death metal. The bassist is amazing.

HALLE-FUCKING-LUJAH, thought that'd never end. And as i said, im no Push over, im just cant see the point in arguing because (and i quote) ". . . It's not like anything I say is gonna make this thread go away."

Anyway, you'll be suprised to know that i actually listened to the whole song. I liked that. Maybe i havent gone into BM enough. I've heard a couple of Mayhem songs, and well the shrieks/scream are what i dont like. If you could get someone with a good shriek it'd be good. (like in Petre Noire). The musicianship in BM is almost always good, liking freezing the Moon by Mayhem. I liked Pestre Noire's song because it was structured well, and now i can kinda see why so many people like BM. (Also i dont dislike BM, its just not my preferred genre.)

Edit: Goddamn Merc. Beat me to it
