So everybody, what are your opinions of avant-garde metal? The experimentation can sometimes go Extreme and is confusing. Sometimes uses of irregular instruments are used (9-stringed bass, 8 stringed guitars, violins). They will use some odd techniques within their music (odd time signatures differing from progressive, a bi-polar feeling in the songs, everyone singing). They also usually accompany strange or obscure lyrics with their music. All of these come together to form the genre, but, do you guys enjoy the sub-genre?

I voted for Yes. I don't listen to much avant-garde bands, but there are some pretty good ones. Diabolical Masquerade would be my favorite, some other bands i listen to are, Unexpect, Dødheimsgard, The Ocean, Stolen Babies and Agalloch

i always though Avant-garde was the same thing as Progressive Metal, i've never been able to tell much of a difference between em, Vintersorg has been described as Avant-Garde before, and i used to be a huge fan of them

I think so...I live in Romania - we got a few weird sounding bands starting with Negura Bunget, Dordeduh, Din Brad and Satanochio 
Also like Agalloch, Allcest(pretty good french band!), Blut aus Nord and some stuff I consider progressive or 'experimental' like Ihsahn, Vulture Industries, Opeth, Ayreon.
