Distant...

Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is an album that uses very typical elements for black metal, hazy distorted guitars, shrieked vocals, poor production, minimalism, all the genres standard stylistic elements are here but there’s something different about Animus. Although the music is pretty much standard fare for the genre, Mr. Animus has created something that despite adhering to all genre conventions carries with it an air of singularity. With the common elements of black metal, Animus has created a minimalistic and droning affair that is more pure and heartfelt than most. There aren’t any words adequate to truly describe the music of Animus, this is an album that must be experienced in its entirety, it would be easy for me to spend ages telling you about this album but the best way to truly experience the music of Animus is to listen to it in the right frame of mind. Word of mouth does no justice to Animus; this is an album that first and foremost demands to be experienced first hand.

Of all the black metal albums I’ve heard, none can match Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated in terms of how austere and esoteric the atmosphere is. Whereas other bands were either dark, nocturnal and evil or depressing, suicidal and hopeless, Animus creates a very unique and solitary atmosphere that can only be described as detached. The music of Animus feels detached and distant; the atmosphere is cold, too cold, almost as though he is made of ice. Many atmospheric black metal bands can spend their entire careers trying to synthesize the aura of winter into their music through the use of their bleak and wintry aesthetics and ambiance, with a few distorted riffs, simplistic drum patterns and rasped vocals Animus has perhaps created the purest representation of the cold season. Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated carries with it the desolation and isolation that the extreme cold brings, the music is oddly detached and disconnected, feeling as though the whole ordeal was created by a race of androids rather than humans. Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is surgically precise in achieving its goal, the music feels clinical, antiseptic, pathological. The atmosphere is cold, too cold, yet with it Animus has created some of the most honest and heartfelt music known to man. This album despite being written by a sole created never feels single minded, ultimately it feels universal, as though Animus was able to channel the collective suffering of the entire human race through his music. Animus has done on one album what most bands can spend their entire careers seeking to do, and that is to create genuine emotion. Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated functions as a sort of lament to the ills of humanity, as though it is weeping for our race. As such it feels weird that the music feels distant and detached, when an album is so capable of striking to the core of the listeners then it is oddly disorienting that the music feels so distant. Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is an album that lacks humanity, yet feels more human than anything that came before or after it.

Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is an album not for those who are seeking complex musicianship or something aesthetically pleasing, this is an album for those who are not blind to the suffering of humanity, this is an album for those who are content with the emptiness that day to day life brings, an album that is unwaveringly heartfelt and earnest. Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is an album that never be replicated, the atmosphere is something that could only have been harnessed at the right time with the right frame of mind, I doubt even the man behind Animus would be able to even come close to matching Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated. This is an album that required to be conceived at the right time, no other moment in time would do justice to this album, this is an album that had to be harnessed at the correct time, in the correct frame of mine, this is an album that can never be recreated, an album that will not be matched in terms of sheer emotional expression. Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is such beautiful and pure music, very few albums can speak to me on the level that Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated can. Animus is more than just a musician; Animus is a chronicler, a chronicler of the collective consciousness of humanity. Akin to other great artists such as Cormac McCarthy, Animus is able to create a work of art that speaks to the soul, which hits to the emotional core of each and every single member of the human race. Animus has the unique quality of being able to become more than music, to be able to connect fully with the listener far more than any other music.

Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated is an album like no other, an album that required a sole moment in time to be harnessed and conceived. An album that will have no equal in terms of emotional devotion, Poems for the Aching, Swords for the Infuriated must be experienced first hand and in the correct frame of mine. This is an album that must be experienced by all, on one album using only a few guitar lines, a single drum beat and whispered shrieks Animus has chronicled the collective suffering of our race.
