Marketing or not, pop artists like MJ and Madonna never would have gotten the street cred they have if their music didn't have at least some redeeming values, that's all I'm saying. It's watered-down music that's designed to have easy-to-digest melodies that appeal to a large majority of people, and I'll be damned if they didn't succeed. Can't really fault music for doing exactly what it set out to do.

Also, all the scandals involving MJ happened AFTER his musical peak in the 80's. Long after.
