Enigmatick says : Merzbow's basically responsible for the Creation of the entire genre so it's valid enough.

No. Merzbow wasn't the first to experiment with noise as a basis for a genre. Lou Reed practiced this before him in 1975 and before that there were composers (e.g.: Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pierre Schaeffer) who experimented with it (either proto-electronic music, musique concrete or some other post-modernist stuff).

And in regards to you saying Nothing separates good and bad noise, I can listen to Two different releases by Merzbow and notice a major difference in quality. Pulse Demon, for example, is really bland compared to an album like Antimonument or Venereology. But that's just my view on this issue.

Figured I was probably talking out of my ass on that one since I haven't explored the noise genre, because, well, I dislike it. From what I've heard though, don't most noise bands basically take influence from Merzbow nowadays? Is the Creation of the noise genre kind of like the Creation of Black Metal in the sense that Mercyful Fate, Bathory and Celtic Frost kind of toyed with elements of the sound and then a bunch of weird Norwegians made it into what it is recognized as today?

and as for the good noise-bad noise thing, my query was that I can't really see what makes a good album any different than a bad one. All of the highly regarded albums I've heard have the exact same qualities as the Despised ones.

Actually the first real noise artist was Luigi Russolo back in the 1910's... look him up.
Anyway, to contribute to this whole back-and-forth thing, I really have to say I prefer trippy avant-garde, surrealist and minimalist music to noise. Things like Darkspace and Sunn O))) and Earth and Echtra and some of Ulver's newer stuff, etc.

I know that Luigi Russolo was the first, hence why I said composers who experimented with noise. I should have added an et cetera in that composers list to point that out.

Oh, okay. Anyway, I don't particularly like Russolo except for the initial novelty of the music, and sometimes I can get in the right mood...
I heard his live performances were incredibly atmospheric, though.
