Lyrics

1. NANSEN

Thus was Nansen’s valedictory
A destiny that transcended human wrought love
The love between a father, wife and child
In which he would leave them
Three years, or more, or forever.

Behind the veil of a suicidal endeavour
Lying in the seemingly supernal realm

The ominous, sacrosanct kingdom of ice
Stands impregnable to all since the dawn of mankind.

Unmapped and unconquered
Only the Fram
Could face this call of fate.

Sheer adversity itself hid under its shroud
The ultimate prize he or anyone could wish for
Nansen embraced the voyage
For himself; for Norway
An infallible expedition.

Alas, this web of entanglement
Degenerates the flesh and the soul's vivacity
Where compassion is opposed.

Nansen cast off the demons of his imagination
The phantom land with all its deceit
Could only turn him away
Not take his life.
Through the white wilderness
He turned home.

2. MUTINY

Incarceration under the vast prison bars of three Oceans
Held captive
Endlessly

Cape Horn permitted no course
Under the shadow of the Cape of Good Hope
Under the wings of the eastward bound sails
The Bounty voyaged onwards
Under the shadow of the Cape of Good Hope
With open arms they were led to entrapment

Paradise toyed with their consciousnesses
Amidst dissoluteness and the mind’s exotica
Which cast them into an interim of mental intoxication
But in Bligh’s sense of guilt for indolence
His callousness exceeded his past

Under the banner of mutiny
Half the ship’s manpower joined him

In the distant whelms
Lay an unthinkable escape
Where it was thought to be it was not
There, the elusive bolthole loomed
Pitcairn’s Island

But innocence had been compounded into depravity
By the deranged acts of men beyond redemption
Who could not return to their rightful nation

4. IMPUNITY

Escape to the island of no escape
An insular, clandestine wheel
Beyond the arm of the law
And the eyes of the world

Where generations
Of endless secrets and deceit meet no end
Where a man is born into a life of exemption
From the punishments for corruption

The wheel of Pitcairn turns under shadows
Pretence, concealment
The assailant is free, the girl is not

Shameful memories are voiced
For the first time in decades
Traumatic wounds are pierced
And unburied in today’s light

This is the chance
To flee from the trap
To run with rudder sanctuary bound
With bolstered sails of windward fortune
And with keys to the skies
She can gaze upon the archipelagos
Now perhaps there is time for tears
But not forever, and not for long
The storm is behind her now.
No return.
