Adam Jonathan Dutkiewicz was born on April 4, 1977 in Westhampton, Massachussetts. He attended the Berklee College of Music in
Boston, Massachussetts and studied production, audio engineering, and playing the bass guitar.
During his time at the college, Adam played bass guitar for metalcore band
Aftershock, along with other members such as Joel Stroetzel (
Killswitch Engage,
Times Of Grace) and his brother Tobias Dutkiewicz in 1996. After releasing the full length "Letters" in 1997 and two split albums,
Aftershock split up in 1999.
Meanwhile, Adam did live drums for metalcore act
Shadows Fall in 1996 to fill in for David Germain (Jaya The Cat), who permanently left the band in 2000.
During that year, Adam, along with vocalist Jesse Leach (
Times Of Grace, ex-
Seemless), bassist Mike D'Antonio (ex-
Overcast) and guitarist Joel Stroetzel had formed metalcore act
Killswitch Engage. Adam played drums for the band, but in 2002, he moved to playing the lead guitar/backing vocals in 2002 after Pete Cortese (ex-
Overcast, ex-
Seemless) left earlier.
Meanwhile,
Aftershock, Adam's old band, had reunited in 2001, and they had released a few more albums before they split up again in 2004.
Since 2002, Adam has not only played lead guitars/back vocals for
Killswitch Engage, but he has produced all their albums as well, along with albums of many other bands such as
As I Lay Dying,
Unearth, and
All That Remains.
In 2007, he was forced to temporarily drop out of
Killswitch Engage during a European tour with
The Haunted due to severe back problems, and he required emergency back surgery and physical therapy.
Meanwhile, he was replaced by guitarist Peter Wichers (
Soilwork) for the rest of the tour.
While Adam was recovering from the surgery at the hospital, he wrote some new material for an upcoming project. He later recorded his new written material at home, and contacted Jesse Leach to help him with vocals and lyrics for the recordings. As a result, they formed a new metalcore band that came to be known as
Times Of Grace.
Later in 2007, Patrick Lachman (ex-
Damageplan, ex-
Halford) filled in for Adam in
Killswitch Engage for most of the No Fear tour, until Adam was able to finish the tour and rejoin the band. However, during the Warped Tour in late 2007, he was once again forced to drop out of the tour so he could fully recover from his surgery. After that, he was able to continue with the band full time.
Meanwhile, Adam and Jesse were recording for their new project
Times Of Grace since 2008, and planned to release a new full-length on summer 2009. Adam recorded guitars, bass, backing vocals, and drums for the band. However, the recording continued until sometime in 2010, and they had set a release date for their new album, 'The Hymn of a Broken Man' on
November 9, 2010. However, the album was delayed, and they finally released the full-length on January 18, 2011 on Roadrunner Records (Slipknot,
Killswitch Engage,
36 Crazyfists).
