Primal Fear, CircleIICircle, Marya Roxx

the Piątek 08 Październik 2010, Sputnik Club, Tampere, Finland

Marya Roxx

What did I expect from this concert on a cold Friday night? Honestly – nothing. I just didn’t know what to expect. Who is Marya Roxx? How many people will come? Is Sputnik enough good club for such a concert?.. You know, Primal Fear and Circle2Circle are not the last bands in the world.
It was a surprisingly good concert. I would even say it was the great concert! All three bands are worth attention and didn’t disappoint our expectations.

First on stage came Marya Roxx. The club was open just for a half an hour and you can imagine there were not that many people. But musicians from USA kept their countenance and did their best. The vocalist, nice and cute girl, is a really good singer with deep and powerful clean voice (well, sometimes it would be nice to hear some screams and growls from her). Three other guys in this band – guitarist, bassist and drummer – are very different but professional musicians. Of course it would be better to see Matt Dillon, the guitarist, as active and mobile as Marya and bassist Luke Kessel, but after all, the band had only half of the stage (Primal Fear’s drums set took the rest of the stage). Actually, the stage in Sputnik club is not very big and high and the whole club seems to be quite small because of its construction. Still it’s a really nice club with the nice bar (haha, yes it’s an important thing when we talk about a club!) and the stage and staff, and I think even big bands could be satisfied with this service.

Well, back to Marya Roxx. So as I told the bass player with vocalist Marya were artistic and bright and energetic although they didn’t have enough space for moving. And obviously people estimated the band as it should be as they came to the stage. It’s hard to define the music style of the band. You can say heavy metal, but it's a bit more heavy and hard. They have a lot from rock’n’roll spirit and something from hard rock, and some features from hardcore and even punk, and definitely a lot of energy and drive! Plus interesting guitar solos, and the drum solo in the middle of the performance, and rhythm changes, unexpected breaks – you know, everything one would like to see and hear on the concert. It was the real show.

Circle II Circle

After the break the second band came
on stage – also the
USA band, Circle2Circle, and continued
this heavy-power metal celebration. I guess many of you already know who it is
and what music it is. They are experienced musicians and they did definitely
the great show. Four men of this band know their business and they are terrific
artists, I should admit. They look as one unit, one whole band – not only four
good musicians. The small stage and some technical problems didn’t spoil this
performance. C2C moved well, communicated with the audience well, and people
reacted better and better with every song. At some point the bass-player Mitch
Stewart went off stage to change the bass-guitar due to the technical problems.
People in the club asked for a drum-solo, but instead of it we got the amazing
guitar solo, Andy Lee has shown his excellent skills. Despite all the problems
and not that many people in the club as C2C could expect, the band was
confident and positive. In the end of their set they played a couple of
Savatage’s hits, the last song was “Living at the Edge of Time”, and the
vocalist Zak Stevens went off stage to the hall and sang among the audience.
That was the perfect performance, something different and interesting, a bit
fun, and it worked really well.

Primal Fear

The break before the Primal Fear’s
performance was quite long. Finally the staff has changed the equipment on the stage and people got what they have waited all the night. Primal Fear is one of the most known German bands in heavy-power metal but they were in
Tampere, Finland, for the first time. This concert was quite a gift for people here. Though, nowadays it’s hard to say that they are “German” band – I’d say it’s the international band, and that is interesting. But their music is sure traditional and Primal Fear played their hits from different albums and gave to the fans everything they could expect: the great show with that known image of the band, the great quality of the songs and sound. The club was full of energy and drive! People have sung with the band and have done all that cliché that every power metal concert has. And that was fun and that was amazing, like going many years back in time, forgetting all the problems and leaving the reality behind. It was the classic show from the classic band. No surprises, no disappointments, plain high level and the excellence of rendition. Applauses!
Many thanks to NKM Enterprises for this concert.
