Nefarium (en)

Nefarium is a band which these days brought itself to the notice of black metal fans mainly by sharing the stage with Dark Funeral during an ongoing Declaration of Hate Tour. A big thanks goes to Adventor and Carnifex, the main persons of the band, who despite all the difficulties rendered their time to answer these questions.

interview NefariumTo start – how are you enjoying the tour?
C: Yes it’s a great experience I think. It’s a really long tour, but anyway it is great to play with so good bands and before Dark Funeral. It is really good.

How is it like, to play with the legend of the genre?
C: Good, even if we play as first or second band every night so we don’t have lot of contact with them, only during the trip and after the show. They are good guys and even if they seem quite scary on the stage they are really good guys. As I said before, it’s a good experience for us to play with so good band.

You’re waiting for your new album Ad Discipulum to release. Could you reveal anything about it?
C: Yeah, the album will be out on seventh of May, we have eight new tracks, it will be out on Agonia records again. We continue to play really fast black metal but we tried to compose something more original. So the main aspects are the rage and the speed and something not so close to the Swedish type.

Do you plan any new video after the release?
C: Yeah, we’re planning the video but we are still discussing it. We’re choosing the place and the song too. But it’s sure that we’ll have a new video out some time after the CD.

If you had to tell “Yeah, thanks to this band we decided to play” which one would it be?
A: In the past maybe Marduk and bands like that, Dark Funeral too.

C: Yes, Nefarium too are compared to the Swedish style by lots of fans and we are so proud of it. But I think now we want to change a bit our style, still maintaining the same meaning of black metal, but as I said before, in the new album we tried to compose some more original stuff. But the main inspiration were the Swedish bands.

So you say that the main inspiration comes from the north. But are there any influences from Italy in your music?
C: Well, I don’t know how to tell. We are not so stick about Italy, we live very very close to France, and I think we don’t know very well the Italian situation about black metal. For example, we live in the feet of the highest mountain of Europe, Mont Blanc. And when people think of Italy, they think about the sea, Sicily, but for us it’s different. In Italy there are lots of black metal bands but I don
interview Nefariumt know any important band.

Few days ago you played in Italy. How would you compare your home fans to the rest of the Europe?
C: Yes, we played there and I must say that the two Italian days were the worst two days of the tour. The organisation and the management were a bit strange because we played there at seven at the evening but in Italy people work until seven or that.

A: So the most fans arrived at eight so as the first band we didn’t have many fans.

C: And above this, I could say that they are a lot interested in the image of the band but not in the artistic side, and we try to produce also technical music, not only black metal, not only noise. So Italy is a strange place to play black metal.

What I always wonder about bands... How did you choose your band name?
C: We started to play in 1997, we chose the name in those years. But it’s just a little word that means delict. And we like the name, we’re lucky because we still like the name but it’s a long time ago we chose it.

And your nicknames? Is it the same?
C: Yeah, it’s just the same.

As I look back to the history of the band, changes in a line-up was something very frequent. Are you happy now with the current line up? Does the chemistry in the band work well?
C: We started to play as two people band, me – Carnifex and Adventor and since the beginning it was the main purpose. I take care of the lyrics and Adventor of the guitars. And yeah, we changed a lot our line-up because we just wanted to play. We wanted to start playing from Italy and we needed also free time for the job and for personal life. But now it’s okay, I’m not sure about the future but I’m sure that Nefarium will always be mainly Adventor and Carnifex. And then we will see.

How did you exactly find the other members by the way?
C: How we found them? Just from the other good bands. For example, now we play with a session bass player from Otragos, it’s a French band, and Garghuf, the drummer, is a drummer of Enthroned and Gorgoroth. We had some connection on the internet and now on stage.

You guys come from different countries. Does it bring any problems to you? How you manage to do rehearsals and so on?
C: Me and Adventor, we liv
interview Nefariume in the same place and the drummer in Slovenian guy so it’s far, and now, the bass player is from France. We work a lot using the internet, the web, and we do it not many times, we only have rehearsals before the tours or some gigs but I think it’s okay for us.

We’re lucky to have you during the Easter, it’s a nice paradox. So what’s your opinion of this holiday?
C: I forget that it is today! I really don’t care about it.

Antireligious topics are quite used these days. Where do you guys get new ideas for the lyrics and the music?
C: I could speak about the new album and I could say that as we live in Italy, in Italy we have Vatican and since we were young, our education was also about the catholic religion. So I think we know a lot about religion. And now with the new album we want to focus more on just one main concept about the Vatican and the Pope, and yeah, we studied a bit more the Bible and other catholic books. So every song of the new album is inspired by biblical characters, for example Longinus and Mary Magdalene or Jesus Christ or the pope. But there’s just only one main concept in the album – the catholic religion.

Adventor, you’re quite a well known tattoo artist. I saw you also made some tattoos for well known names. Is playing in the band bringing you more customers?
A: Yeah, I have my own personal shop for quite a long time, for eight years, and playing in a band helps me to bring some more different customers.

N: I saw that you also made a tattoo for a guy from Shining.

A: Yeah, the singer, and also for 1349 and Enthroned. Quite a lot of people.

Some question to finish. What does a spirit of metal mean to you?
C: Well, I think it’s mainly a kind of life. We have a band and we need a lot of time. When we aren’t at work, we always advertise and do work for band so at the and I think we trust in what we’re doing, not just the artistic side, also the meaning of what we’re doing. So as I said, it’s a kind of life.

Any last words?
C: Now we have a new album and I really hope that the people will appreciate it and know that we’re not just band that plays the Swedish black metal but really something more. So I think that all the people that like black metal will like this new album.
