|Here's a short interview with Ralf Scheepers, shortly before the release of their music video "Bad Guys Wear Black", title from their upcoming album to be released in January, "Unbreakable."|Hello, let me say that I am very glad of having the privilege to interview you.
Thank you! That's some nice words for a beginning! :-)))Your ninth album , "Unbreakable" will be out early 2012. Already the name (which was originally subject to the suggestions of the fans) can make us think. Can we interpret this as an expression of pride of these 15 years passed in this band?
Somehow yes....... in the past few months and years some uncool things happened around and in Primal Fear. Our statement is saying that nothing can stop us from making the music we love to do! No weak music industry nor anything else can ever change this! As long as we are able to play our music and as long as we are able to deliver, we will deliver! Period! :-)The fans expect a lot an album of the size of "Jaws of Death" or "Nuclear Fire". The "Unbreakable" album will be there a continuity with what you have done since "Seven Seals" or will we attend a form of back?
It has all in my opinion. You hear a bone crushing, head banging, ear bursting metal album with a lot of great riffs, rhythms, beats and melodies..... If you like metal, you like UNBREAKABLE!The album cover is very reminiscent to the "Devil's Ground" one. Can we see a sign?
The message/sign is the eagle! It became a mascot and a synonym for liberty, power, strength and freedom! As soon as you see the cover, you see Primal Fear and you know what you buy.....the fans can trust on us.....we won't release anything we wouldn't like!2011 was prolific. Has it been obvious for you to juggle between "Primal Fear", "Sinner" and the release of the album "Sheepers" which was rather well received?
We consider this as fortune and luck! There are not many musicians out there who have the chance to do what we do...(which is a pity on one hand). So as I have said, we can consider us as lucky dudes to release our music and we are pleased that it is also well accepted from the metal community!Besides, h
ow was the recording of Unbreakable"? Wasn’t it difficult with the tours and other outings?
We are well organized people! :-) It's one step after another.....AND: We are a great team! Writing with Mat, Magnus, Alex and Randy is fun and you can also hear this on the album. It never became stress or bad work for us...and that's the way it's supposed to be right? :-)What conclusions you draw from your concert this year? Do you project to play in some festivals in 2012 and if yes, wicth ones?
We didn't perform so much this year, apart from the short south american tour a charity gig and WACKEN. But this is also part of the bizz, you record albums one year and go on tour the next year...it's an alternating process you know... We will definitely play at the Bang Your Head Festival in July next year! Everything else (touring) is in the pipes and will be planned pretty soon. Be sure that you can see us playing in early 2012, close to your hometowns! :-))A clip is scheduled for the song "Bad Guys Wear Black", if I think so. Due to the picture that have circulated, it looks like you're in a museum trains. It is aesthetically beautiful. What is the message you want to get with the Decor? Can you reveal more about this clip, and sharing with us your fears, your desires?
Yes it was recorded in a train museum in Nurenberg Germany. The video director and the team thought that it is a great location, so if you find the perfect lighting and atmospheres you can do huge things! And I think again that it turned out amazing! No big story behind it, just a band performance clip in front of (or in) a great looking location. No fear or desires, just metal! :-)You also have reconduct your contract with the label Frontiers Records. Do you think that this label is now becoming as important as Nuclear Blast or maybe more important? What do you like in them?
For us it's always important to work with people you can trust and show loyalty..... The extended contract has to do with trust and contentment from both sides. So why changing a running system....3" color="#CCCCCC">After this "Unbreakable", can we expect immediately a new "Sinner" or a "Scheepers"’s album or is the time to take some holidays?
Holidays? What is this? :-)) No, as I have said the next step is a big tour next year with hopefully many places where we never have been and of course those places we have been before and rocked the hell out of us! :-)))Monuments of Melodic Power Music like Blind Guardian and Stratovarius have returned to the spotlight with the latest achievements rather amazing. «Smaller» bands like Powerwolf or Stormwarrior have made great things too in this year 2011. What do you think about this revival? Will Primal Fear beone of the bands that hit hard in 2012?
To be honest, I don't think we can speak about a revival or something....we just do what we do....the reaction on the market is sometimes better and sometimes not so good as of economical issues.... If we "hit hard" we are ok with it, if not I think we still "hit hard"! :-)))In your opinion Witch bands are the great revelations of this year? And which bands have you liked particularly?
I just got to know TYR musically and I like their sound a lot.......but again: To consider a band as a revelation or something like that might be some kind of exaggeration. I still like Disturbed a lot, the new ACCEPT also blew me away..... and then again, I had not so much of a time to check all new bands out this year....Give us your general feelings around this past year, and wishes for the future.
The year has been very creative and that makes us proud! What the future will bring, we will see but one thing is for sure we will stay UNBREAKABLE!Do you have something to add for our readers?
Keep supporting the music you love to hear! Don't let it down..... Keep the faith! On behalf of Spirit of Metal, I thank you warmly and wish you a happy new year 2012.
Thank you very much! Have some relaxed holidays and a happy new year 2012, too!
