Italy's Mortal Fungus are an old school death metal band active since 1991, but they kept a low profile for many years and didn't release much stuff. Their "discography" may seem huge, but it's actually made of two home tapes (re-released as a commemorative collection on CD in 2005), plus two "official releases, the tape "Frightening Countries" (re-released as a split CD with Arkenemy in 2003) and recent 7 songs CD "Back to the Lombrosary".

Not many people actually listened to the early home tapes, that's no surprise because they sound really bad.
"Frightening Countries" was their first professional recording, it sounds a bit rushed do to lack of money and time, but tells all about Mortal Fungus intention to revive the old good times when death metal and tape trading ruled the underground.

The title track and "Season of survival" are in the vein of Obituary, while "Liquid putrescence" is more melodic and technical. Lyrics don't even try to sound groovy or socially conscious, they deal with death and lovecraftian imagery.
"Commemoration of the dead" is a re-worked piece from the early home-tapes, it features a memorable Obituary-like main riff, with a tribute to Necrophagia in the middle, a fast section followed by a melodic solo. Joutsen's drums and Andy's lead are the strong points on this tape and this particular song for sure.

Closing this 6 songs tape are a good cover of Autopsy's "Service for a vacant coffin" and the fast "Dark divulgations".
