This is the first full-length release by the "Epic Death Metal" band, Ex Deo, which is essentially, a side project of the Canadian Death metal band Kataklysm.
Romulus has definitely been one of the better releases this year for me, mainly because it is a brand new idea. Epic, Roman Empire themed Death Metal, just as Nile is tied to Egyptology, so Ex Deo is tied to the Roman Empire. some of the better tracks on the album include Storm the Gates of Alesia, Cryhavoc, In Her dark Embrace, and Legio XIII.
The one complaint I have on the album is that although they may have a completely new idea, there isn't much change within it, meaning that it seems like many of the songs have a similar, guitar chugging, tempo to them (which bears a striking resemblance to that of Kataklsym's guitar tempos also), and the occasional Guitar Melody in between the steady riffs.
The album also boasts many Guest appearances including Behemoth's Nergal who can be heard in the chanting in the song Cruor Nostri Abbas, as well as a guitar solo perfomed by Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom).
If you've been looking for a more epic and unique sound in Death Metal, Ex Deo may be it. Though if you aren't a huge Kataklysm fan, you may not be overjoyed by this release, it definitely still has many Kataklysm-esque sounds to it, but at the same time, the epicness of it overshadows it in many ways. This is one release that you'll either love or hate.
