This is one of my favorite albums. I bought it at a local record store in 2004. At first it wasnt what I was expecting. I was expecting some nice and ugly Norwegian black metal. It took a couple of listens for me to appreciate this beautiful work of metal art. It starts out with a classical music intro with lots of fine keyboard playing, to accompany the usual array of metal instruments. The vocals of Vintersorg start off grim and then he shows us his beautifully clean style of vocals. This is a super group of talent. Each member is a fine performer. Especially noticeable are the vocals and keyboards. The song writing is the foundation for this awesome album. This is not black metal, this is Norwegian progressive metal. Some of the finest progressive out there. This album is not boring, it rocks.

This is their 6th album and 2nd album with Vintersorg on vocals. I think that it is their best album. It is Norwegian Prog metal. The music style alternates between a classic music style of rock and heavy metal. The musicianship is exceptional. It has pianos and the keyboard play is terrific. It also sounds like there are some violins and other instruments that are unconventional for a metal band. The vocals are outstanding. They alternate between a grim voice (like a demon growl) and a clean voice (it reminds me of the vocals from pop bands like Styx or Queen). I think that the band that is most similar to Borknagar is Dimmu Borgir. But Borknagar's style is not nearly as dark as that of Dimmu Borgir. The theme of this album seems to be about how earth science relates to humanity, with a few twists about the gods. The album starts off with the beginning of an old classic song, which sounds like it is coming from a vinyl LP (you can hear the static). Then it breaks out into an intense prog metal jam. This is a great album, I must have heard it hundreds of times.
